So I've considered the advice I received earlier in this thread:
http://community.boredofstudies.org/505/cars-automobiles/310273/hot-hatches-sub-30k-3.html

And I think that I might shy away from spending that much on a car for the time being, considering priorities (looking to save up for an apartment deposit within the next 3 years).

I still have an interest in a new car though and I'm still open to suggestions.

Obviously, I've decreased the limit to $20k or under and it doesn't have to be a hot hatch. That being said, I still prefer handling over performance, and I'm not interested in an Evo/WRX.

Depends how much you're willing to invest in terms of time to fix things up/deal with issues which may arise.

Are you looking new or used?

I see 'exciting' as the criteria. Doesn't necessarily mean awesome acceleration or go-kart handling, but it's implied.

Can't remember if you're on your fulls yet OzKo but how about a Mini Cooper? It seems to have a bit more personality which might be of interest to you, and handles well.

Yep, on full licence.
