Hi there,

I have been offered an APA scholarship to begin my PhD next semester. I am from New Zealand and have lived there my entire life. While I have visited Sydney before I cannot say that I am familiar with the lifestyle and living costs. I should learn these eventually but I would really like to know if anyone here could give me some kind of idea for how my budgeting should work? Assuming that I have a little bit of income (couple hundred/week) on top of the scholarship (which is around $25,800/year), how much should I be looking to pay for rent and utilities, and then food/transport? I'm extremely worried that I will arrive in the country then find out that the scholarship is not enough to cover all my expenses.

I have applied for several of the on-campus accommodation - Selle house and Darlington house - what are they like? Are the facilities good value for money? In the likely case that I do not attain a place in either place however, where would be a good place to look for rent, in terms of safety, value and location? I am in my mid 20s and while I am not fussy with my living conditions I do value my own space and privacy and would be looking for a studio or a single room.

I understand that this is a fairly specific question but I decided to post this here for visibility and also because other students may be wondering the same thing. I would really appreciate it if anyone can share their knowledge here!

Went to open days for both uni's , and still can't decide

The rental market in Sydney is quite pricey compared to other cities in Australia. You would be looking at rent as your major money sink.

If you live near the uni, then I figure that the cost of transport won't be too high. Loads of affordable eateries around USYD, and you can save more by making your own food at home. Maybe have a look around Gumtree to see if there are any roomshare options available.

I'm entering in 2016 but assume that if I do get the marks for usyd and unsw law.

The question is: Usyd law or unsw law? I heard that usyd law although it's prestigious but has a lot of stuck up snobs. I don't want to be with those kind of people for 5 years of my degree.

Every single one of these is "I heard that..."

I've met quite a number of law students, and they're all down to earth and just great people overall. And this isn't a "I heard that...", I've actually met them.

I went to a UNSW party, was like 90% UNSW and 10% USYD.

The USYD people all danced and socialised whilst the UNSW people sat in the corner.

You figure it out

I assume you're referring to the second part of my comment? If so, then I agree with you. It was not my intention to say that only Law students were great people overall.
