I have my half yearly exams next week, and I have a problem with my writing hand so I am getting a writer. But I am really worried that it is going to really be a big disadvantage in the exam, especially if they are asking me to spell heaps of words for the English exam tomorrow because I have a pretty complex vocabulary.

Has anyone used a writer before or know someone that has and if so can you please share any tips on using a writer? Like best way to communicate with them, whether you should write out all the hard words at the start of the exam so they can just copy them in, or how to dictate complex quotes where there is capital letters, dashes, slashes etc.

Any help would be really appreciated :)

Yeah assuming you've damaged your writing hand to an extent where you can no longer write

At my school they choose an A + student from year 11 to do the writing, as they are of course fast at writing and have a great vocabulary

Apparently you just read out whatever comes to mind and they will write it out

So make sure that you speak at a pace at which they can remember everything and still write it out so that it's legible.

^ This is not from personal experience though, it's just what I've heard from friends

So you're telling me that if i break my hand on the day of the exam, i can hire anyone to write down the answers for me. How do they regulate this? Can't i just make the writer do the paper for me, and we'll have a delightful conversation while his at it.
Never came across this in my life.

It doesn't work they way you think it works. The person who is writing isn't going to write anything unless OP tells him to write, otherwise that will be considered as cheating, and I'm sure they'll be supervised by a teacher.

True

Keep in mind that these are top students who are writing for you

Pretty sure bribery would not work either

But still isn't it unfair. For instance, if my writing capability is 40 words per minute and the writer's 80 words per minute. And we're doing History right. I'll be able to take advantage of this, as we speak faster than we write.

You can get a writer for the HSC/internal exams if your writing speed is below average.

Also using a writer is apparently very difficult to adjust too...

It's hard to get used to at first - for english it was extremely hard to make sure I phased my analysis in an easy to understand way as well as my vocabulary, even thought it was mostly using words that wouldn't be do hard including 'peroration' and 'equipoise' it made it take a lot of time. Plus the writer was pretty slow - so I only ended up with 5 pages each for both of my essays. However, business worked out the opposite way - they writer was really fast but still legible and I managed to smash out a ridiculously comprehensive 11 page extended response!

It took my friend about 3-4 years before they became confident at it..
5 pages isn't too bad for essays..
