Describe the advantages of Medicare for Australian Citizens. 3 marks
Medicare is a health insurance program, providing majorly free health-care or subsidised health costs. It provides Australians with advantages such as the overall ability to increase their overall level of health, provides free health cover for all individuals no matter their circumstance, providing equality and access and further subsidises cost of health of medical practitioners.

1) Epidemiology is the study of disease or illnesses in a certain population with its aim to identify trends and patterns and further the cause of a major disease in the given population. It has 4 measures, consisting of mortality, morbidity, life expectancy and infant mortality rates. Utilising these measures allows epidemiologists to understand the prevalence and incidence of certain diseases or illnesses with its attempt to attain data regarding the certain population group. (e.g. mortality from lung cancer/smoking). However, once this data is attained, this data is passed onto governments or regulatory bodies in which gather and investigate it to identify certain priority population groups and develop key strategies or health promotion initiatives with its attempt to reduce the prevalence and incidence in both the short-term and long-term, increasing the level of health amongst Australians. An example can be gathered from 'The National Tobacco Strategy' aiming to reduce the rates and mortalities of Australians from smoking induced deaths such as lung cancer.

Vitamins are organic compounds vital for the body to develop and grow. Excess vitimins C and D will be exerted from the body nevertheless excess Vitimins A and D will accumulate in the body negatively causing joint pain, fatigue and headaches. Similarly, minerals are chemical compounds such as Iron which is found in meats and leafy greens which prevents low heamoglobin levels which is important to carry oxygen around the body during exercise otherwise the athletes will feel fatigued. Another mineral is calcium which is found in dairy. Supplementation can prevent the deterioration of bones causing osteoporosis. Finally creatine is an essential amino acid stored in the skeletal system and is important as it replenishes PC for sports that rely on the ATP PC system. However creatine has the potential to cause calcium loss, a 1 kg fluid retention and kidney damage.
here's my attempt at my own question, though I think yours was really good!
Vitamins and minerals are organic compounds in which act as supplements for performance. Utilising both, they allow not only assist cellular functions within the body but provides a boost in the immune system, providing optimal health for athletes. However, some downfalls are that given that those who consume vitamins and minerals strive for a life in sport, their diet should initially be a healthy, balanced diet meaning vitamin and mineral deficiency should not be present. Additionally, any access of potential vitamins cannot be stored meaning they are excreted if there is an excess. There is also a high cost attached.

Creatine is an amino acid in which works in tandem with phosphate to creatine 'phosphate creatine', essential for the ATP/PC system and short, explosive bursts of energy. Using this as supplementation can potentially boost PC stores minimally and may even further assist in muscle development and strength. However, it has plenty of side-effects detrimental towards the level of health and further may not be needed depending on the activity of the athlete.

How does health promotion based on the Ottawa Charter promote equity? (5)
This is a hard one....
The National Tabaco campaign developes personal skills by advertising a free 24hr quilt lines on the packaging of the boxes as well as graphical images of the affects of smoking. This makes smoking not appealing and makes an individual take responsibility for their own health. The 24 hours quit lines are free and all Australians can call anytime of the day supporting the notion of equality as no Australians are disadvantaged by socioeconomic status. Creating supportive environments creates equity by creating smoke free zones. So all Australians can be free from the affects of passive smoking in out door dinning areas. Strengthening community action by having Youth Tabaco Free Days this addresses equality by understanding the youth are more vulnerable to the habit of smoking. Reoriantating Heath services is achieved by the government giving funds to the Cancer council for cigaret taxes towards cancer research. Equity is achieved by understand all Australians deserve the right to be healthy. Building public policy depicts equity by maintaining the right to be healthy by preventing the advertisement of cigarets in a positive way and producing cigarets in the form of confectionary foods.

haha yep, I had trouble on this one! Not a bad answer but I don't think it would hurt providing an outline of the Ottawa Charter and its principles.

In what situations would personal and prescribed judging criteria be used to appraise sporting performance? (4)
Personal judging criteria are ideas that an individual might have about a sporting performance. They are based upon emotions and feelings. Coaches, spectators and commentators would use personal judging criteria to comment on a performance they have just observed. This criteria is more common in aesthetically pleasing sports such as dance and gymnastics and particularly at an amateur level. Prescribed judging criteria are standards developed by the governing body or sports organisation to measure the quality of a performance and increase objectivity. Elite levels of sport will use these criteria to make an assessment about the execution of the skill, technique and complexity. E.g. Diving or gymnastics will add or deduct points on a scorecard based on specified criteria such as take-off and landing.

Yeah, I could definitely Improve and since the Ottawa chart is most likely going to be in our exam in some shape or form I should look over my notes again.

I'm confused with the word "appraise".
Personal criterial is what the crowd and coach expect of the an athlete or team. The crowd and coach will have high expectations for the athlete to win which will motivate the athlete to succeed. Additionally the crowd will cheer the athlete on giving additional positive external motivation. A judging criteria is more precise and the athlete must meet high expectations to meet the marking guidelines. The athlete wil Understand what is expected of them with the prescribed criteria. This relates to subjective supports such as gymnastics, dancing and surfing where there will be a high emphasis on the complexity of the skill. Thus the athlete will work towards increasing their skill level to achieve more points as one point can determine if they win or loose. Is that okay??

pretty good! I think you could aim to weave the idea of objective and subjective measures more throughout your response, but you did incorporate at the end.
you could probably refine your definition of personal/prescribed as like : personal judging criteria is a set of non-preconceived ideas / based on opinion etc
Otherwise yes, not too bad of a response and yes, appraise is an ambiguous term.

The principles of training are key concepts to be considered whilst undertaking training of any sort. It embodies, specificity, progressive overload, reversibility, training thresh-holds, variety and warm-up and cool-down. Understanding these concepts are key towards the undertaking of aerobic training.

Specificity refers towards tailoring a program in which is specific towards the goal or sport the athlete is undertaking, essentially training the correct energy system. (e.g. long distance for aerobic athletes). Specificity within aerobic training would be considered as undertaking long-distance or continuous training methods in which stresses the athlete, pushing and maintain their heart-rate to be within 70-80%. Rests should be minimal to continual place the cardio-respiratory system under stress, developing the bodies ability to utilise oxygen efficiently, increase haemoglobin levels and venous flow, overall increasing the V02 max. (E.g. fartlek running, up and down hills at a constant pace). If specificity is undertaken and training consists of short distance running, it trains the wrong energy system and therefore not considered to be aerobic as oxygen is not present. (e.g. 20m sprints).

Progressive overload refers towards slowly pushing the body's comfort zones, allowing physiological adaptations to occur, increasing attributes such as endurance and stamina. Undertaking progressive overload within aerobic training requires slowly increasing variables such as the distance covered (e.g. 3kms to 4kms) and minimising the time taken to complete the run. However, making sure adaptations occur are key before increasing the intensity and duration as it can lead towards overtraining and fatigue. Undertaking aerobic interval and decreasing the time taken to run 800m overtime is an example of progressive overload within aerobic training.

Through specificity of aerobic programs and developing specific training programs in which stress the cardio-respiratory system is key towards improving the endurance of an athlete by correctly training the energy system involved. Progressive overload can further be linked to aerobic training by slowly ramping up the intensity whilst decreasing the duration to develop the aerobic energy system whilst undertaking either continuous, fartlek, interval or circuit training.


Could possibly talk about warm-up and training thresholds but it's a really long response haha! Found it was awkwardish to tie in analyse. :(

You aced that!!! 10 times better than the attempt I just wrote down in the writing booklet. For 7 marks you would struggle to fit it all in the writing space unless you went to an extra writing booklet in the exam

Mortality varies for both women and men however these trends are declining. Men have higher mortality rates for cardiovascular disease, cancer and are more likely to participate in risky activities. While women can still develop these diseases, mortality is less common. Mortality in women is higher with breast cancer while there is a very rare chances of men developing it. These aspects also result in women having a longer life expectancy then men. Morbidity is disease and illness that does not cause death but impacts on an individual's quality of life. As mentioned above men are more prone to chronic disease this is due to other life style factors such as diabetes, smoking and inactivity. What have I missed?

I think you should add SOME statistics to support your argument. Adding some statistics just adds some in-depth in which answers without statistics don't have. Whilst your response gets around full marks, adding some stats guarantees you the top marks as it leaves an impression.
