Hey guys I got a high enough ATAR for doing Engineering Flexi but not Engineering Mechanical. Is there a reason to why the flexi program requires a lower atar? Because from my knowledge everyone in engineering does the same subjects in first year, and with flexi after the first year i can transfer to mechanical.

It's because of demand and supply. With flexible, it's set to a faculty cut-off, whereas with mechanical it is set to a cut-off by the school of mechanical.

You still have to transfer later on into mechanical which isn't guaranteed as it is based on demand by others wanting to study it.

Keep mechanical as your top preference. You might be able to get in. Have quite a few backup options as well, including flexible first year.

If you are in FFY you are guaranteed to be able to move into civil, mech,chemical, or electrical, regardless of your atar or your first year wam.

Those students who have met the requirements for first year entry (ATAR cut-off) into a particular degree and stream will be guaranteed a place in second year in that stream or degree even though they choose the Flexible First Year program.

Students attaining high average marks in the Flexible First Year program will be eligible to apply for second year entry into higher ATAR cut-off degrees or streams. See transfer requirements in the table shown below. These conditions for entry into a second year specialist degree or stream will also apply for combined degree candidates.

OP said they didn't reach the ATAR cut-off for mechanical engineering for the previous year but they did reach the cut-off for flexible first year.

You can move from FFY to a specific stream on one of two criteria
1: do you have the original ATAR, or
2: is your first year WAM high enough

The OP did not make criteria number 1
The OP will always make criteria number 2 for civil mech Chem or elec as the wam criteria is "always allowed".

Hence the OP can move to mech.
