I decided to create my own miscellaneous maths thread for questions that I go through.

Work out the total costs of the option below:

Option 1:
Upfront Cost
Annual/Running Cost
Total Cost after 3 years

Option 1:

*Purchase 6 new cars- $18,990 each less an 8% fleet discount
* Driver Wages (1 driver per new vehicle)- $45,000 salary
* Fuel/Maintenance- $8,500 per vehicle, per year.

My thinking to the above question is Upfront Cost refers to the initial purchase price:

Upfront Cost= (6 x 18 990) x 0.92 = $104,824.80

Annual Running Cost= (( 600 x 6+ 45,000 x 6+ 8500 x 6) = $324,600

Total Cost after 3 years= 324,600 x 3+ 104824.80= $1,078,625

Correct me if Im wrong

Where does the "600 x 6" come from in the annual running costs?

Wouldn't it be times by 3 not by 6 as you want to find the total cost after three years?

This is my working out in Microsoft Excel, I treated the Purchase of the vehicle as a Fixed Cost. Insurance, wages and Fuel as variable costs. (I multiplied six because there are 6 drivers). I then had a separate cell where I then multiplied the annual variable costs by 3.

What does a dot above or below the equal sign refer to ? Cambridge 3 U textbook makes mention of it (and I have seen it in alot of other textbooks before without thinking too much about it.

International standard is double tilde.

Australian standard is double division.

This is why we can't have nice things.

Is this HSC General Maths material (or is it from somewhere else)? Also, we don't seem to be told whether Wendy has dependants, or her partner's income. So do we have enough information to do the question?

Any takers for this question? OK Integrand knew. This was a question from one of the current schools in NSW doing General Maths. Personally, feel its a higher standard than your normal HSC taxable income question and obviously different style as well.
