Are you any good with english coz this is a serious and urgent question?
...I got 15/15 for short answer in year 10 if that counts...

I'm just going to ignore the fact that you've implied that I can't give good advice if I'm not good at English

Re how you keep going on a tangent in short answers. It's great that you're aware it's happening cause now you can confront it head on! Every time you write a sentence, ask yourself how this is relevant to the question at hand. if it isn't, time to scrap it. If you're trying to read the sentence and you're starting to run out of breath, it's too long. The marker will probably eventually lost!

Coz I'm wasting so much time on a question worth 1 mark and I feel that I haven't answered the question since english is my weakest subject.

Hey Guys

I don't want an english tutor because I feel it's a waste of time and money (and they don't teach what you're learning at school) but I feel the need for it at the same time because my english is attrocious (even though I'm doing advanced). Just wondering but how do I do well in English without tutoring?

Thanks
Dont forget that tutoring does not always have to be weekly. I often agree to tutor just for a month or 6 to 10 times a year depending on the need. You are right about the content. I only use material that is the current syllabus and reinforce what is being learnt at school and use my class teaching resources. Tutoring isnt for everyone but sometimes just a few lessons is enough to strengthen knowledge of a particular module etc.

I would advise you to read/watch your completed texts again with the benefit of hindsight and that can clarify some understanding.

If you have poems annotated find blank copies of the poems so you read them without annotation when you revise

Practice writing essays etc without using your texts to test your level of understanding.

You are wise to be careful with tutoring and whether it is for you or not .

I hope this gives you some ideas and that you can gain the understanding you think .

All the best

This is what I did.
I was and still am crap at English. I do not know how to write an essay on my own. Like after I write one word, what word do i write after that? and then when i write a sentence, what is my next sentence gonna be?? i never knew. I couldn't form my own sentences properly.

Hence, I went to a tutor to write up my essays (like maybe 6 times overall). I memorised word for word. I pasted word for word in HSC, just adapting my intros and paragraphs a little.
Gave me an 82 in Adv English, even with a 300-500 word Hamlet essay in the HSC (because i forgot what i had memorised for that). I know that isn't great but hey, it was a band 5 which scales decently well.

Why did you memorise your english essays? And why were you bad at english? Did you neglect it the most or what?
