Thomas Edison was a real dick and idiot. You could compare Thomas Edison to Steve Jobs, while Nikola Tesla can be compared to Steve Wozniak.

Nikola Tesla was the real father of the electrical age, not Edison! Tesla contributions were revolutionary in every way!

A really insightful and interesting read! Enjoy!

Very interesting. Though I kind of always knew Edison was a douchebag.

The fact is: Tesla ain't shit.
He was an obsessive, compulsive, autistic recluse. He has no right or has done anything worth any merit to be idolised, the fact is that he (and others like him eg: Woz), should be grateful that people like Thomas Edison and Steve Jobs existed because without "douchebags" like them we consumers wouldn't have their inventions and instead some other CEOs product who has managed to make products from R&D profitable and usable for everyone else... At the end of the day people like Tesla are virtually disposable while effective marketers, leaders and "visionaries" are the driving force of our society today despite the fact they are "douchebags".

You can't have one without the other.

Nikola Tesla was my favourite person in the world. No hyperbole, my favourite man. And yeah, Thomas Edison can suck it.

I mean, Tesla wasn't perfect himself. He thought the theory of relativity was "a mass of error and deceptive ideas and opposed to common sense".

The first AC generator was built by Hippolyte Pixii in 1832, not Tesla.

Tesla didn't believe in radio waves until later in life either, and thought that if they did exist they wouldn't be able to transmit past line of sight.

He also didn't believe in electrons.

This whole comic reads just like a circlejerk of "real geeks".

And Edison wasn't that bad. Created the first phonograph, credited for the industrial research lab. Made the light bulb practical. Made advances in the medical use of x-rays. Plus all the other things he funded.

The "feud" was more between George Westinghouse and Edison.

Tesla and Edison are not comparable. Without Tesla we'd probably still be using candles. Edison could barely power a single light bulb. I'm not saying he had no achievements but to even place him within the same level of genius as Tesla is ridiculous. Tesla was quite possibly the greatest visionary/innovator/researcher the world has seen so far. Edison played Tesla and he's the ultimate douche in my books.

Never claimed Edison was smarter, I think Tesla wins in that regard.

How exactly did Edison play Tesla?

Told Tesla he'd pay him a shit ton of money to fix some broken equipment.

Tesla fixed it, went to claim reward.

Edison: 'Tesla you don't understand American humour'

So the quote from Tesla's autobiography My Inventions (1919) is:

"For nearly a year my regular hours were from 10.30 A.M. until 5 o'clock the next morning without a day's exception. Edison said to me: "I have had many hard-working assistants but you take the cake." During this period I designed twenty-four different types of standard machines with short cores and of uniform pattern which replaced the old ones. The Manager had promised me fifty thousand dollars on the completion of this task but it turned out to be a practical joke. This gave me a painful shock and I resigned my position."

It's not made clear who the Manager is, and it's widely believed to be Samuel Insull, who managed a great deal of the daily operations towards the end of Tesla's time with Edison (1885). Edison had withdrawn from his company a bit after the death of his wife (1884). Samuel Isnull appeared to dislike Tesla quite strongly. And AFAIK Tesla does not mention the infamous "Tesla you don't understand American humour" at all. I'd be happy to be proven wrong though.

This is Edison on Tesla in 1896:

"Tesla is an experimenter of the highest type and may produce in time all that he says he can."

This is Tesla on Edison, again from his autobiography My Inventions:

"The meeting with Edison was a memorable event in my life. I was amazed at this wonderful man who, without early advantages and scientific training, had accomplished so much. I had studied a dozen languages, delved in literature and art, and had spent my best years in libraries reading all sorts of stuff that fell into my hands, from Newton's "Principia" to the novels of Paul de Kock, and felt that most of my life had been squandered. But it did not take long before I recognized that it was the best thing I could have done."

When Tesla and Edison were discussing x-rays, Edison wrote this in his letter to Tesla in 1896:

"My dear Tesla, Many thanks for your letter. I hope you are progressing and will give us something that will beat Roentgen."
