Hey guys,
I needed some advice on dropping subjects, and your thoughts on doing 10 units. Any other tips would be extremely helpful.
My results from year 11:

Ancient History - Exam 86% (av. 73%) 2/8. Course rank 3/8
Chemistry - Exam 77% (av. 66%) 8/32. Course rank 9/32
English Advanced - Exam 78% (av. 67%) 20/80. Course rank 12/80
Geography - Exam 92% (av. 74%) 4/38. Course Rank 4/38
Maths Ext. 1 - Exam 74% (av. 68%) 9/28. Course rank 8/28
Maths - Exam 70% (av. 72%) 22/36. Course Rank 21/36
Physics - Exam 63% (av. 56%) 10/26. Course Rank 6/26

Total: 13 units

I did quite a lot of sport and other activities throughout year 11 (which I've dropped so I can focus primarily on my schoolwork). I didn't put a huge amount of effort into my Prelims as well.

So yeah any suggestions on what subject to drop would be greatly appreciated, as well as the possibility of doing 10 units. Other tips as well would be fantastic.
Thank you so much :)

Probably physics but maybe have a look at topscores for numbers of band 6s or see if you can get data on previous cohorts performance in respective subjects.

I'd keep at least 11 units...

What is your school rank?

Yeah 10 units is fine and probably drop physics due to it being the lowest score

I think you should keep your subjects for a considerable amount of Year 12 - maybe 1 term, half a year, right before trials etc to get an insight on how you will do in the HSC year.

I know people think that you should drop whatever subject you're doing terribly in but my MX1 in my Prelim year was around 60% and this year I finished my course with a recorded (unaligned, unmoderated, what not) 40/50 for MX1. This also happened with my Prelim Physics which was around 60% and this year I finished my course with a recorded (unmoderated etc etc) 76% (and improved about 10 ranks). This is also before all the moderating/aligning/scaling so anything can happen.

BUT REGARDLESS OF ALL OF THAT, what I'm saying is improving in Year 12 will happen if you put the work into it. I recommend to be running 11 or 12 units so you do have room for any problem areas throughout the year rather than being stuck with 10 units where some of the units are going sour.

Yeah I agree- I have 11 myself- it acts as a bit of a safety net yet it's not as bad as having 2 units that ultimately won't count.

On a side note wow you have 38 in your geo cohort?! I have 5 in my class!

At my school our teachers encourage us to keep 12 units at least until mid-course, but it would be helpful to go into the hsc with 12 units just for precautions in case you stuff up a exam. You seem more than capable to achieve high marks with 12 units.

Yeah, our school goes really well at geography so everyone picks it!

But thanks all for advice. At the moment I'm going to keep 13 units and decide which subject to drop based on my results.

your ranks are really important so you should take them int consideration when choosing what to drop. also i have 12 units and am dropping to 11 as my schoool requires 1 unit or more of religion, of which i am dropping to 1 unit as it was the worst. Also your marks affect everyone else so its best to get rid of the lowest ones
