So you're saying, that if hypothetically someone gave everyone all their resources from the previous semester then the entire cohort is going to be failed for academic misconduct? I think, if you reckon that something should be dealt about students passing on information then you need to raise it up with the maths department to never set similar things and confuse the students instead.

What's the problem with acquiring information to benefit their study? The way I see cheating is purposefully looking at something you were never given a right to, but a students' own material is their own stuff and they have that right. And it's not plagiarism unless it's clear that word for word replications have been made. I fail to see how passing on information constitutes academic misconduct.

Because this isn't a question about ethics. It's only about principles themselves. I don't see anything that has been defied just by asking the experienced for help in any way whatsoever.

In fact, it also makes you wonder how they obtained the information. Don't you at least suspect that the information has been passed around further more than just one cohort? Maybe even 5 cohorts?
I probably made it unclear or have interpreted your questions & statements wrong but I'm talking about ethics. Otherwise, I agree with you for the most part.

Isn't plagiarism stealing work/ideas and presenting them as your own but doesn't necessarily has to be word for word replication? It's difficult to detect if someone has stolen ideas from past assignment and presented it as their own, so it's an ethical issue.

Yep, of course.

That's different. Ethics wise, I reckon it probably isn't the right thing.

Well that's why under normal circumstances I don't believe in assignments in maths.

MMAN3000 - Professional Engineering / Communication
Ease: both a 0/10 and 10/10
was a piss easy course didn't have to do much work but it was literally known as the worst course, very pointless didn't learn anything from this course at all

Content: 0/10
there was literally nothing to learn (being very serious here)

Lecturer:
Mark Whitty - 8/10 was pretty cool, explained the technical side to thesis, studies etc
Cory Martin - 0/10 I will refrain from making negative comments out of fear of what has happened to previous BoSers
Other guest lectures 0/10 - Again will refrain from making negative comments

Tutor: 0/10
Didn't know her name, she was arab. Literally did not learn anything in this course (being quite serious again)

Overall: 0/10
Apparently the previous year had a worser course, so they "improved it" this year but they fucked it up even more lmao

MTRN3020 - Modelling and Control of Mechatronic Systems
Ease: 6.5/10
3 labs worth 50%. you can get 90% in each lab very very easily if you do the simulink/matlab part properly by following the labs. final exam was something else all together. was just questions from the textbook which can be found online easily. also join the fb group for solutions

Content: 2/10
was very dry and boring. nothing interesting. just "design this controler" make sure u take these into account very tedious

Lecturer: DrJ 2/10
presented the dry content very dry also very difficult to hear so sit in the front during lectures as they arent recorded properly

Tutor: 1/10
some asian girl idk what she was saying half the time. she spoke in asian to some asian students made it very difficult to understand what was going on. She didn;t explain things very well and her accent was very strong. imo labs were pointless not worth waking up 9am monday morning for, just do them in your own time

Overall: 3/10
shit subject and shit course wouldn't recommend but easily prof elective if ur a mechanical engineer (core for mechatronic engineers)

MTRN2500 - COMP for MTRN Engineers (C++)
Ease: 5/10
3 assignments 1 exam. assigs are very shit, just same generic programming, most people get 70+% in them if you can do it sort of right

Content: 6/10
it's learning OOP and C++ in a IDE environment so it's unfamiliar also quite scary at first. but u get used to it and it isnt so bad

Lecturer: 2/10 DrJ
sildes contain half done code and just programs during the lecture very useless to go to tbh.

Tutors: 0/10
the labs were unoffical as in u didnt have to go to them they didn't really help unles you had specific questions about ur code

Overall: first mtrn course most people do and it is generally shit imo.

MMAN2300 - Engineering Mechanics 2
Ease: 1/10
very hard course imo, 2 parts to this course, vibrarions which is okay-ish but part B is just pure calcs and if you mess up one step you get the entire question wrong. Solutions to questions also span 6+ pages literally

Content: 5/10 imo
imo was interesting to see the effects that small things had on systems like damping ratio and increasing speed a little bit and seeing the result but the calculations were very hard, tbh I didn't get most of the calcs right even if i was on the right track

Lecturer: Niclole kessisiigihsiusosusiosus 2/10, Zhongxaio peng 3/10
nicole just read of lecture slides wasn't really helpful tbh.
peng was alright but went through the examples really quickly

Tutor: Eggler 7/10, indian guy 1/10
eggler was pretty good tutor, I am a slow student and I could keep up with him. explained every step really well
indian guy, I think he was an alright tutor but was very shy and quiet and could barely hear him

Overall: 4/10
didn't like it because I think it was beyond the scope of my capabilities but was an alright course and u can do well if you really know how to apply concepts really well to problems but exams are a new ballgame alltogther because there are some very retarted questions for example in the final exam it was like "find the velocity of the of this point on the aircraft wing given zeta = 0.8 and N rpm" something like that

hello just wondering if anyone can tell me about FINS1613 in 2016 Sem1, after the lecturer has been changed to Robert Maloney? Are they harder than before?

Everyone roasted the course in CATEI and they definitely know about the problem now. Thr lectures thought that this course was going fine but after students complained throughout the semester it raised attention with the head of school and now they're evaluating grading methods

lol the CATEI for MMAN3000 has probably made negative impact for this course. It gets destroyed each year with no improvement.

Robert Tumarkin you mean, yes it seems he is returning next sem as LIC and he is probably the best lecturer (definitely for finance) admistrates and teaches extremely well. He was one in charge in semester 1 in previous years and is reputatively easier than semester 2's lecturer. However, although Tumarkin is not hard, the subject itself may pose challenges for some where pre finals was an utter joke but some of the questions in the finals was challenging. You may not enjoy the subject but you will definitely appreciate Robert in charge.

Think I didnt read your q but it doesnt seem like Sean Maloney is in charge now.

Although you're right in assuming Turnakin. On timetable.unsw it appeared as though he was becoming the LIC.

Wasn't there thoughts to remove this course for the future because it is so badly delivered? It is courses like this that I hear that makes me wonder how UNSW has one of the best engineering faculties in Australia (because its student satisfaction rate would definitely not be the highest at this rate)

Probably the other engineering faculties saving the reputation.

Well it's one course, certainly not reflective of the others. Problem with this one is that it's not engineering, rather professionalism and communication with engineering, which by 3rd year, it should be quite obvious.

It actually replaced another similar 4th year course so I don't think it will be removed.

It can't be removed because it is a requirement from Engineers Australia (where we get our accreditation from once we graduate) that we must complete that course. It is also a presequite for thesis

Are you thinking about progressing towards a thesis?

Wow that suckssss, hopefully they employ new tutors who are more competent and redesign the whole course to have less arbitrary marking standards.

just a note about fins1613 I hope you guys realise there is no difference in "difficulty" any more because the course conveners for 1613 discovered a massive drop in enrolments in semester 2 last year (?) or year before

Pete Andersen who was a tutor of 1613 posted up a message pretty much called out students in black and white who would only pick it in semester 1. I think the message is somewhere on this board.
