$\noindent It is clear from a sketch of the graph of $y = |x|$ that the area under the curve between $-2$ and $2$ is $4$ (it's the area of a square with side length $2$).$

$\noindent Thus $\int_{-2}^{2}|x|\, \mathrm{d}x = 4$.$
