I think if you get below 30 ATAR, they don't tell you your exact ATAR, they just tell you you got a * ATAR, which means you got less than 30.

Not really. Most people who got 30 ATAR didn't try hard enough in HSC. And, I'm not sure but I'm assuming most Uni's have a cut off above * for their courses.

The * is there to not demoralise you in case you got 10.05.
