I feel like the Financial Services stuff has no real future, and it looks so dry.

Everyone makes it seem like robots and technology will have taken over by the time we finish uni - and the only degrees worth doing are Computer Science.

Lol, I had the same paranoia a few months ago. It's not gonna happen lol. AI is nowhere as near as advanced as it's claimed to be and automation is something that's been happening for millenia. When we invented the car, we automated horses and the jobs around but new jobs were created fixing those cars, selling those cars, and fueling those cars.

Creative destruction and disruption of industries has something that has happened for ever and always will.

If you think automation will occur on a catastrophic level, why is it that the real unemployment figures have never gone above 15% in Australia?

Automation is a good thing for the economy. Shitty, low paid jobs are destroyed and new, higher paying ones are created. Why?

The demand for unskilled labour declines at a slower rate than the demand for high skilled human capital increases. In the long run, this leads to

+ Cheaper products
+ New industries (robots, software)

These more developed industries provide high skill, high wage jobs. A win-win for everyone (except the people who got laid off)

However, this leads to qualifications creep. This more complicated economy now requires workers who are higher skiled and have a greater human capital to fill these new high skilled job. Hence why everyone goes to uni these days.

Wow, good job.

I got 80% in my first task - and I guess I just didn't have enough preparation. I feel like a legal test is going in blindly with concepts and case studies without really knowing what to expect.

Would you have any tips?

Well, you're a lot naturally smarter than me. I average around 70% when I don't study for tests, and like 40% (sometimes lower) when it's for math or science haha.

Okay so legal studies is a lot about the concepts. Case studies, too, but you're not going to properly apply them without understanding the concepts first. I'll go step-by-step the process I use. Everyone's different but maybe it'll help:

1) I recommend getting the syllabus out and make notes under each dot point.
2) Revise your notes
3) Branch out. Relying on one textbook is dangerous, especially when it comes to the actual HSC. Read a variety of sources to deepen your understanding of the concepts already learned. For example, I would read articles about the rule of law after learning it in class. That way, I'll be sort of applying it while broadening my understanding. Plus, if I'm lucky, I can sneak out a case study.
4) PAST PAPERS! I admit I haven't done this one yet lol, maybe I should get started. But this should help ease your fear of going in blindly, since the exam structure's the same annually
5) Speaking of structures, learn the essay structure. Read Band 6 essays. My teacher gave me one, and it has honestly helped so much.
7) Learn your question terminology. Obviously an answer to a "define" question's going to be a lot shorter than an "Evaluate", and feature different ways of answering. Learn them and practice. (Has there been a thread for HSC question terminology?? Hmm... if not, maybe I should start one)
8) Forgot about this – make a separate note sheet for your case studies and try to link it in with the syllabus

Hey! I got my half yearly report last week and I'm not too happy with it. I'm completely bombing biology, and purposely failing because it's such a bludge lol. Really hoping I can pull up my English Adv and mathematics mark before the yearlies.

English Adv 80% - 12/67
English Ext 83% - 3/10
Mathematics 59% - 49/93
Legal Studies 83% - 12/54
Economics 83% - 17/30
Biology 47% - 49/63
Multimedia 88% - 3/30

Ayyy I'm terrible at Biology too, they even got my report mark wrong, they gave me 29/100 and 84/85 and I instantly knew something was wrong and my teacher knew something was wrong too so in the end I received 64/100 and 33/85. Modern and Legal is the only thing keeping me going 90%, 10/67 and 94% 1/57 respectively. Even though I came 3/69 for English Advanced, a mark of 71 shows that our cohort is very weak in English examinations and just like you I hope to pull up both Maths and English before our dreaded Preliminary exams D:

Omg that sucks hahaha. But, jesus christ, your modern and legal marks are impeccable! I'm really upset that I haven't scraped 90% in any subject, it's kinda depressing tbh. Did my economics exam last Friday and oh god, that question was absolutely traumatising. I didn't expect it to be that at all, so I'm almost definite I won't get over 70% for it. I have an English speech this Friday, which is freaking me out but I have to get over 85% for it or I might cry. Hahahah I know 80% isn't terrible but I just feel like my English marks haven't been up to scratch with the previous 90s I've pulled in other years, especially since it's usually my best performing subject. Thank god I'm not in the bottom 30 of the cohort though, because they're getting cut from the course next term (the school forces the bottom half to go down to standard). My maths marks have also been ridiculous, I always procrastinate when I'm studying for it so I basically wing the tests haha. I don't actually find it too challenging though, half of my errors are just dumb mistakes I swear to god lol. Just out of curiosity, what's your mark/rank for Maths?

I do General Maths because I'm so garbage it's not even funny but I got 79/100 and ranked 8/49, could've done way better and came into my half yearly exam all cocky and thinking ' it's general it's so easy then bam 79% ' my maths is weak so I make up for it for my Legal and Modern and don't even get me started on Economics, I literally average 70s in my exam, I thought it was like Commerce but it's not and it's much different to what I expected but I'll still do it anyway because there's good competition and strives me to do better. Then there's Biology... lol
