China- Places to see , things to do (1 Viewer)

Anyone here been there? Any recommended places?


thinking of doing a short stop there for 6 weeks by the end of this year.

I recommend going during the winter time if time allows. I've been there a couple times to visit family and summer is not a good weather there as there's no beaches and its stupidly humid. But you probably already are going winter I'm assuming.

HongKong is a place I'd recommend. It allows you to communicate easily in English, so it's fairly easy to get around as HK is pretty used to English tourists. I can't vouch for any other places as I haven't been there. There's alot of emphasis in shopping in Hong Kong, not sure if you're in to that kind of stuff.

Trying to plan Shanghai and Beijing. I have many Chinese friends from China through my time from uni. Alot of people ask me whether im interested in 'Rural' or 'Urban'. I never really understood what they meant by that. (im assuming its a city v country thing.....similiar to Australia ....only thing is international visitors prefer the cities).

I also looked at the flights special for a multi way trip from Sydney to Shanghai to Beijing back to Sydney costing around $1100.....which is affordable for me.


Just want to unwind after a long HSC year (worth of tutoring) and my other job.

Definitely Shanghai for the food! Their xiao long baos and sheng jian baos are the bomb! HK has amazing food as well. Lots of local street snacks and dim sum!

AFAIK there's not that much interesting in rural areas. Tourism is much more popular in urban environments. But it also depends on what you want to see.

Beijing is good for historical, architectural attractions - Great Wall, Tiananmen Square, Forbidden city.
Hong Kong is good for shopping, and overall very lively. Would be the best city to live in if moving as an English speaking student and wanting to live in China.
Shanghai has a great abundance in modern architecture, as well as shopping.
Macau has Portugese influences, also has casinos.
etcetc.

The suburbs are terrible for tourist activities, so I don't recommend it.

I recommend going to Haymarket and UNSW. It's basically the same thing.

Hong Kong and Macau is definitely a visit worthy. There's nothing much in Beijing or Shanghai.

Definitely would travel Tibet (shouldn't be apart of China but is....) but cool place to go, the people & landscape are amazing - plus you get to see first hand how the country is affected by Chinese government invasion

Why is everyone replying threads from a few years ago rn lol...I would recommend go Dali, Yunnan. It gots a rlly chilling atmosphere and great music. For good food try Sichuan Province, historical stuff try Henan Province and Xi'an city.(Got great food as well and I am from Henan lol...great place, avg cost of living, not crazy high as Beijing or Shanghai)
