Should I write digital notes?! 🧐 (1 Viewer)

Hi,
I was wondering if anyone could provide advice on handwriting digital notes on my iPad (6th gen). Would that be appropriate for the HSC? For e.g: biology, geography, economics, English write all notes digitally except math. Practice essays and such will be written by hand but the nOtEs will be written digitally. First brief notes written on laptop in class then transferred to iPad after school kinda system. Then after finishing digital notes then print them.

I currently do half my notes on my laptop and half on paper but I need them all to be in one area so I think an iPad would be most appropriate just because I don’t like how typing has prevented me to hand write and doing biology notes on paper is a pain in the ass when you have to constantly paste stuff into the notebook to understand what specific cells look like.

do you guys think it would be suitable and effective method to use an iPad to study for the HSC/prelim?
if you have any experience with this method please share!

ps I’m thinking of investing in an Apple Pencil for it

Using an iPad+ Apple pencil might be good for notes in apps like notability/goodnotes especially with the copy/paste/trace functionality.
iirc the 6th gen iPad is quite small (9.7"?) so it might be strenuous to work on it for long periods of time. Also, the writing experience on the screen and grip of the pencil (or other alternatives like styluses and the Logitech crayon) is quite different to working with pen and paper, so you might adapt an odd writing style when it comes to written tests which may cause cramps etc.

Imo, digitally is always better

Reasons why I type mine up

a) easier to search ie. ctrl F
b) easier to edit
c) accessible everywhere
d) I solely study using flashcards and I have over 1000 for one semester's work, but even for when I wasn't using flashcards and were writing notes normally, I would still type them up.

I used to hand write and i'd get obsessed about my handwriting/how pretty my notes were that i'd ended up spending the entire holidays on one module during the holidays and nothing else. Needless to say I didn't do well that year

Using apple pencil is probably the best of both worlds. However, you do lose out on the ctrl f feature and it does make it a bit harder to edit. I guess you could mitigate this by adding very specific headers to each section.


If you're willing to try something else out though, try out flashcards. They have been scientifically proven to be far superior than any method of learning, memorising or understanding. Search up "scientific ways to study" into google and have a look at the video by Ali Abdaal

I've got an iPad Pro for Uni and it's great - you can annotate slides/notes and work out problems without using up any paper. A feature I really like is that Apple just recently introduced an app called 'SideCar', which allows your iPad to essentially become a 2nd monitor to your MacBook.

There are also a ton of apps out there that make it easier to create notes digitally (GoodNotes, Notably)... Plus, files from your iPad and MacBook can be synced through iCloud, so you never lose anything ..

It's a good investment and will 100% increase your productivity if you ask me.

Depends on your own learning style though. Some people learn by handwriting, others prefer to type. Main benefit of digital is you can't lose it (and easier to share on BoS later right?).

For me back in the day I used to write, and then I'd type it up and use the opportunity to reformat/change layout/organise/etc...

How about the Surface (Pro, Book. Laptop, Go) any of them would do. I personally use the Surface Pro X for literally everything, work, notes watching some stuff I shouldn't be watching you name it, I get it done there.

You get a bit of both world, with literally the same features as an Ipad Pro using the surface pen and a fully-fledged Win-10 Laptop.

Also cheaper than an Ipad, and more flexible as other apps can run on it much better compared to an Ipad, it just feels limited and jailed. (Jailbreak an Ipad to get the most out of it provided that you do not care about the warranty). There's one drive to rival Icloud in that manner.

It's honestly overrated, the only thing that Apple can keep at a high standard is the price. If people think security is an issue, just crack an Antivirus on the computer, if you got 94 in IPT, I'm pretty sure you can tinker around and get paid stuff for free on there.

I found one in a Hotel before the shutdown and boy it works great with a few hacks and tinkering.

Oh actually - that's a good point - I had a surface pro for a while and it was great. However, I found it really hard adapting to it because I've used Apple products all my life.... Also, you can connect the surface pro to other Apple products which makes it a little impractical in that sense...

I'm also looking at going to digital handwritten notes! I normally handwrite, but it's just been getting really annoying because I'd be out and about and if I didn't bring a certain binder to school than I wouldn't be able to study that subject even if I was suddenly super motivated.

I'm just struggling to choose between the 11" and the 12'9" iPad pro... I feel the 12'9" is too big and the 11" is too small. Any thoughts on this?

I have a 5yo Mac Air but it's slowly dying on me and I need a new something anyways, so tossing up what to get. The iPad is on the top of my list because I draw too and I want Procreate.

(You really don't need both.) But if you have money to spare, get it.

But generally, the Quintet would do you well.

Or just get Android and Windows for an effective duo.

Apple:
- Great Software
- Perks like airdrop improve the quality of life a lot.
- Easy to Use
- More support software-wise
- Aesthetically pleasing and great build quality (though a case is extremely vital for an iPhone)
- Increased security
x Need to purchase more devices to get the benefits as advertised like airdrop car-play and other cool gestures that are featured on advertisements.
x Lack of freedom
x Many apps and stuff can be pretty pricey


Android/Windows
- Standalone
- Various makes and models to tailor to your individual needs
- More free apps
- Cheap, Apple only sells high-end products whereas android and windows versions can cater to any budget, big or small.
x 2 years support for android and windows laptops can last shorter than apple ones in updates
x Though others may prefer android or windows software, it can appear convoluted to some
x Antivirus is a pain in the neck and the security is not up there with Apple Devices
x Some just don't look good and look like bulky pieces of hardware.


- Also, don't try to purchase apple products for the "brand". It's the inside that counts, literally.
