That's completely moronic. That isn't what defines a sport. That isn't why e-sports are sports.

All kinds of stuff has a fandom and a spectators. What next, poker is a sport? Scrabble is a sport? Essay writing competitions are a sport?

Without an element of physical exertion, it isn't a sport. If you can have a sport without physical exertion, then the very concept of "sport" becomes entirely meaningless.

Alike the fact that we've changed the sentiment behind clown emoji's to respond to eejits like yourself, the definition of sport has changed too...

It hasn't, you're just declaring it has

Chess and e-sports are categorically different and you're evidently too stupid to understand this

So you justify Esports as a sport because it requires hand movements? As does chess... Literally no difference between the motor skills required for e.g. League of Legends and chess... Smh...

I've explained this half a dozen times already, including in my response to you

Chess doesn't require superior motor skills to win. Magnus calrson could wear silicon oven mitts on his hands covered with grease (i.e. greatly impaired ability to use his fingers) and it woudn't help me beat him at all. What if a top league player tried doing that?

Moving pieces around the board takes no skill, it's a logistical exercise that simply displays the choice you have made

There is no skill involved

How can you possibly think there is no difference in motor skills between league and chess? The motor skills in league require coordination and timing to be executed properly, chess doesn't. In league, you make decisions, how well you are able to move the mouse click on things precisely and at the right time is a significant part of the skill of the game, not just knowing what you should do. The skill in chess is 100% about decisions. Its 100% mental. Moving the pieces takes no skill and is purely a logistical exercise. I can pick up a chess piece and move it to another square just as good as any grandmaster. It isn't a skill-based mechanic.

Imagine when we are able to play chess by hooking up electrodes to our brain and silently communicating our moves mentally to a computer which executes those moves without us having to move a muscle. Is this fundamentally a different game to chess? Of course not! The gameplay mechanics are 100% the same, it's a mere logistical difference.

I have concluded that SylviaB would take you to court for castling / doing an en passant.

Peek at the poll, if you are still adamant I'm sure Rudy Giuliani can sort you out.
Over & out

Im interested what is you response to his argument though? Ad hominem and ad populum don't really work.

So...you don't actually have an argument against what I said?

Let me make this even MORE simple for you.

Is blindfold chess a sport? If there's spectators and fans and commentary....but the players aren't physically doing anything other than speaking. Does not going through the mechanical motion of moving a piece of clicking on a square make it not a sport?

Also, consider this: If I were playing chess in a live event and magnus carlson was in the audience watching and he was communicating with me via a hidden ear piece, would I be able to play well? Of course I would. Carlson would be watching the match and making all of the decisions, and all I had to do was move the pieces as he directs me to, it would practically be as if Carlson were playing himself. Once he was used to such an arrangement, I should expect to be able to "play" as well as Carlson would if he were sitting here moving the pieces, despite me being very bad at chess.

Now, what if it were League? Would I be able to play well if I had an earpiece and Sang Hoy Soon was telling me what to do? Of course not. Knowing what to do is only one part of E-sports, being able to execute this decision requires significant skill itself, even if I've played league before and know all the rules and game mechanics.

Let me reiterate: My argument stands that the definition of 'sport' is not inclusive and it hasn't been officially modernized. Dissecting the criteria and applying it to chess, and suggesting that essay writing should be considered a sport if chess is, is delusional and obviously incorrect. What really matters is the public perception of a sport, and it's definition.

Also, that idea of declaring a sport cannot be impacted with an external voice for decision making is absurd. Esport competitors have been disqualified / fined for exactly that, particularly in first-person shooters etc.

That is the last I have on this, I stand by chess being a sport, and I find devising a criteria to debunk that is absurd and mediocre.

Checkmate.

god you're an idiot

Either answer my actual arguments or go away

I didn't say that having secret communication wouldn't affect e-sports performance, I'm saying with chess, there is zero difference between doing that and having carlson actually play himself. It wouldn't just help me, for all intents and purposes its as if he is playing himself. I would be exactly as good at him if I had access to nothing other than his decision making faculties. His motor skills are completely, absolutely, totally irrelevant. You specifically said the motor skills aspect of chess makes it a sport, but I have comprehensively demonstrated that chess skill has nothing to do with motor skills.

But I mean look at how stupid your links are: "Chess requires physical exertion as mental exertion manifests itself physically"

By this logic EVERYTHING involves physical exertion. There's literally nothing that can be done that isn't a sport by this incredibly stupid definition. By this logic, essay writing competitions are sport.

"Chess requires skill as a deep and serious chess training is necessary to become good at chess."

Same for essay writing competitions

"Chess is competitive as the participating players feel the drive to win."

Same as essay writing competitions

"Chess has rules and etiquette which are officially recognized internationally."

Same as essay writing competitions

If the definition of sport includes things that are PURELY mental decision making, then sports as a concept is so trivial so as to be meaningless.

You aren't really replying to his argument. I think you are trying to argue that the definition of words can change and really the word 'sport,' means what people at a certain time period think it means. For example the word 'nice,' used to mean someone who was ignorant but no one in the 21st century thinks thats what nice means.

I think you should concede the idea that chess requires physical activity or any sort of motor skills, and so the traditional definition of a sport being: "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or a team competes against another or others for entertainment," cannot be applied to chess.

Overall I don't think enough people think of a sport as purely competition based and associate sport with physical activity (even if the international olympic commitee changed their definition).
