no effect other than being able to expect some somewhat decent internal marks if ur ranks aren't the best, and being able to expect some good internal marks if ur ranks are among the best.

What about when most students perform well in the HSC exam in higher ranked schools, compared to only a few performing well in lower ranked schools?

what difference does it make?
theoretically if u chuck the average higher ranked school student they would be performing in the best "few" in the lower ranked.

the biggest/main impact is the effect of seeing a bunch of people sweating near you leading to you to care more about your marks and sweating a bit more.

There is no mathematical “scaling advantage“ in being in a “higher ranked” school. The only thing that may help is the culture/resourcefulness of the school may peer pressure you to work harder.

Also, a school’s ranking is something constructed by the media (e.g. ranked by number of band 6s). There is no such thing as an “official” ranking for a school.
