Hi, I did the selective test a couple years ago and unfortunately didn’t make it to the school I wanted to. I am currently in year 8. I made it into a partial-selective school and was absolutely devastated. I used to be a decently smart kid back then, as my tutor had predicted me score to at least in the 230 range but I didn’t get anywhere remotely close to it. Even till this day, I think about it regretting my decisions of not working harder and have lost all motivation to even study anymore. What should I do now?

Plenty of time to transfer. Grind next year all good. You're only in year 8. You can transfer up until year 11 I think. Mate, you did your selective test 2 years ago and you're still letting it drag you down... Move on and work on getting better.

The problem is that I don’t think my reports and intellect overall is good enough for the schools that I want to go to. So if you could provide some study tips for each subject and share how to increase your keenness and motivation to do well at school that would be nice. thank you. You don’t have to answer this but may I ask if you go to a selective school?

Motivation follows progress. Meaning you have to start working before you get motivated. It's like saying you've got a boulder on a mountain which you want to get to the bottom. You can't just expect it to roll down on its own. You've got to give it a push.

Don't start when you "feel" motivated. Because that shit is temporary. You've just got to do it.

You're still in year 8! You still have plenty of time and opportunities to hopefully get accepted at a selective school. Being in a partially selective school is, without a doubt, better than being in a fully comprehensive school so you should be thankful for that! I must also point out that the school you go to has a minimal effect on your ATAR, meaning you must never lose hope of your ATAR. Your ATAR depends on your efforts and determination in your studies throughout year 12. If you aim to achieve a high ATAR, rest assured, you can do so at virtually any school.

What you should do starting now is take a deep breath and begin your preparations because you still have other attempts at selective schools and you must do your absolute best if you wish to get accepted eventually and achieve your personal goal/dream of going to your desired selective school.

If I'm being honest, I didn't really study at all from years 7-9. Mostly because I knew my work well and I understood key concepts. As for year 11-12, I do mostly math/sciency subjects so my study methods for those are just to grind through as many questions as possible. For english I've just been writing and sending my drafts to tutors/teachers for feedback.

motivation = ur going to go to a better school if u study and u will most likely stay at ur current school if u do not

tips:
- memorise and adapt exemplar essays for humanities
- learn content + do prac q's for maths and science

My parents were absolutely shocked as I did quite decent in the Oppurtunity Class Entrance Exam, and didn’t think that I would the score that I got. Even till this day, I think about it regretting my decisions of not working harder and have lost all motivation to even study anymore. I still haven’t gotten over it and have lost all hope of my atar. What should I do now?

totally agree with this, i know a good amount of people who've gotten 99+ atar from low ranking non selective schools. Plus, there is a lot of competition in those big selective schools (from what i hear anyway) which could be a negative thing for some students. I honestly don't think going to any school affects you atar that much as long as you set yourself goals and work hard in achieving them.

I also got a pretty bad mark back in year 6 for my selective, I tried again in year 8, 9, 10 for like girra, baulko, hurlstone, etc. Didnt get in any of them but right now in year 12, i feel like im well on my way on achieving my atar goal (99+) from a partially selective school (hopefully i get it ). But yea the point is, make sure you keep working hard and dont get bogged down by set backs. If you really want to go to fully selective schools, you have to opportunity to retry in year 9 and 10 (possibly in year 11? but im not sure). Plus you're only in year 8, i dont think i was that committed in year 8.

If we want to get more specific, the way in which your school (more precisely your cohort) affects you relates more to the internal mark. If you are part of an academically capable cohort (such as that of a selective school) and your final rank is good, you can expect a good internal mark (technical name is Assessment Mark) which makes up 50% of your final mark for a particular subject.

While your internal assessment mark is moderated, your HSC exam mark is unchanged no matter what school you are from. You keep your own HSC exam mark. So it also comes down to your own performance in the external exams. Your school ranking doesn't affect your external exam marks.

Oh okay thank you so much! I was really worried because out of the 8 classes only 2 classes are selective meaning 3/4s are mainstream. And our school has a lot of eshays and not to be rude but it doesn’t seem like they care about school seeing that they jig a lot!

No worries! The situation seems interesting at your current school to say the least haha . It's nevertheless great to see that you have become more positive and optimistic about this matter. This is a mentality you should definitely maintain as you progress in your school life as it will keep you in a positive mindset, which in turn will make your journey (including studies/preparations/revision as well as school life) all the way up to year 12 easier and more enjoyable!

I heard that what your grade scores on their atar slightly affects yours too? Is that true?

If you're studying well enough to get a 99 ATAR u can get that in the lowest ranked school in the state or the best school in the state. Only difference may be the teachers (however best school =/= best teachers, most of them have tutors).

Few points:
- I went to a top 5 selective school, teachers weren't all great, everyone relied on external tutoring courses
- Going to a top tier selective school does not guarantee high marks. There was a roughly 10 mark difference between my internal and external mark for english ext because my rank was below average
- high school won't matter in the future, as long as you get the marks you need to get into that uni course to launch your career (I'm assuming that's why you want a high atar)


tldr school doesn't matter, not the end of the world, you can definitely get that shiny high ATAR you want if you put the effort in

Ok so I've noted that you're looking at Normo or Tech which are on opposite sides of the world. I would consider a balance between travel and selective tbh - no point travelling for 2 hrs each way for something that won't really benefit you much at all. Every region has a reasonable SS.
