Is dux determined after trials or after the external hsc is marked?

Normally ATAR for most schools. Usually some kind of ceremony for high achievers like the following year after atars released at most schools

They are based on school assessments at the school my kids attend. Most of the time, it’s the same student, but I think if they are different individuals, whoever gets the highest ATAR in their school should probably also be entitled to call themselves ‘Dux’.

yes I agree with eagle mum. my school determines dux after trials and before the HSC, but the person receiving the title also then goes on to receive the highest ATAR, so it's almost like the school predicts who'll get the highest ATAR pretty much every year.

however the streak was broken last year in my cohort, the person who received dux did not actually get* the highest ATAR, I did LOL. but I don't actually believe or tell people I'm dux it seems weird since I didn't formally get the title u kno

Congratulations!
The ATAR reflects the overall sum of internal & external assessments, so whatever the terminology, my view is that you outperformed this other individual (I guess it can be like comparing ‘apples & oranges’ when trying to evaluate students taking different subjects and someone who tops six or seven ‘softer’ subjects might get a lower ATAR than someone who tops four ‘hard’ subjects so schools probably take English ranks into consideration as it’s the only common subject).

I‘ve sifted through many CVs of job applicants & IMO it would not be inappropriate to state something like ‘ATAR Dux: 9X.XX‘ in yours.

Yeah but a lot of schools ask the students for their ATARs after because they publish them in like the school annual report or some type of newsletter/website post. Obviously though with that it's not like compulsory but most people if they did well would probably let them know.

Does NESA provide the HSC marks & aggregate to the school? More than one student could share the school’s highest ATAR, but their HSC aggregate score might actually differ.
