Hey Everyone.
I’m hoping to doing a gap year once the year starts where I would be hoping to be working for my dad’s business. I was wondering how would a gap year work. Would I still be available for courses that I have chosen from UAC entry and would my ATAR be the same? If so What the process of doing a university degree after a gap year.
P.S I helping my dad as he has ever so depressed about my mother’s death earlier this year due to breast cancer. I hoping to making him smile by helping him and helping maintain his wellbeing. I have discussed this with my current Carrers Advisor, he recommends it not a safe route as I have more pressure to learn more during the gap year. But I want further clarification from the people who may run this site or people who have graduated who have taken a gap year.
In addition, Can somebody also clarify to me that English Studies is a NON ATAR subject so I can shut my friend up who really thinks he is cool doing English Studies and can make it into a 90+ Atar range.
Happy Days Everyone, best of luck in the HSC and keep being yourself. We live in a tough world right now but It doesn’t mean you can’t achieve your wholes keep working all Class of 2021 ❤

pretty sure english studies is non ATAR. On the topic of gap year, you could use your ATAR this year and get an offer this year then defer it for 1 year

In terms of English Studies, it is a Category B subject, with an optional HSC exam. It works the same way as other Category B subjects, such as Mathematics Standard 1. Have a look at the diagram below from NESA:

As you can see, not sitting the English Studies HSC exam means you will be eligible to receive your Higher School Certificate, but you won't receive an ATAR. On the other hand, sitting the English Studies HSC exam means you will be eligible for both your Higher School Certificate and ATAR.

The highest ATAR achieved by a student who sat the English Studies Examination in 2020 was 80.30.

I hope this helps! :D

probably aligns real badly hahaha
Definitely specially when you got a ATAR friend trapped in English Studies with a heavy smoker teacher and a bunch of hooligans who do dumb actions. I don’t understand how he didn’t get to do English Standard with the rest of the good side of our cohort

Don't know what your career's advisor is on about.
A gap year is fine and it can actually be a good break or transition if used well (working for the family business is a good use of that time).

What you do is you accept the offer and defer for 12 months.

In terms of English Studies, jimmy is right, it doesn't scale well and you are only eligible for an ATAR if you sit the exam.
