Congrats man! How were your grades and extra-curriculars? And for normo, don't you have to do a specialised test aswell or was it cancelled?
thanks!

my grades weren't exactly the best when applying for normo. i had about half a's and half b's for both of my school reports, so i dont think i performed as well in school compared to other students
i did have some extra curricular, such as state and national level sport, music, duke of edinburgh, src, which i think really benefited me when applying.

we still had a test this year, but it was online and we were required to install a proctoring software, which essentially tracked our screen, microphones, webcam, and any suspicious activity such as bizarre eye movements or looking away for a long duration of time. the test was monitored surprisingly well, considering the current pandemic that forced remote learning. hope this helped!

Oh ok, Im having very similar grades, and I can see your extra curricular are way better than mine, I tried for house captain, but one person in my class had his mum work at the school so he got it instead of me. But how do you apply for duke of Edinburgh?

How hard was the exam
for the year 11 exam this year, it consisted of an unseen written text and four text analysis questions (total of 12 marks i believe) and the last 8 marker was a creative writing piece, where there was a stimulus, and students were required to continue from the stimulus for a word limit of 400 words.

the maths test, i found was harder then expected considering ive been consistently getting A10 in maths lol. but i think its just because the syllabus taught at normo was slightly more difficult compared to my school which is ranked in the 120s. however, i still managed to do the maths section of the test, since ive done tutoring beforehand. you will definitely need to do well in school for maths, especially 5.3 if you hope to do well at the normo exam. additionally, you should also study ahead for maths, if you are in a school thats not ranked too well, because they will test you on topics that you may have not learnt before.

ultimately, it will depend on how well you are already performing at maths and english, to guarantee a simple and easy test. hope this helped!

that one person in your class is so lucky lmao

at my current school, they offered duke of ed to students at year 9 and year 10 kinda out of the blue ig. i think it was at one morning assembly when a teacher told us about the whole duke of ed scheme. if you dont know if you school runs duke of ed or not you should ask your year advisor or a teacher who would know about it.

and if you do take part, make sure to do it with some friends. it will make it so so fun!

also if u do take part in duke of ed, you will be required to do a sport, service and skill. this essentially means you need to do one hour a week of physical activity, learning a skill such as music, chess, scouts e.t.c. and a commnunity/school service where you help out.

No the thing is that care about your rankings as well. I got 30+ certificates from my school, including overall achievement for year 7 and 8 and a scholarship. That's what pushed my profile
yea thats literally what i did as well and got into girra and penrith... i added a bunch of certificates i had from school like amc distinction, src, duke of ed, citenzship award, debating etc.

Since there aren’t any specific topics or concepts covered, just keep doing as many AMC past papers under timed conditions as possible to improve. I did about 1 or 2 a day for the week prior to the AMC, and it was very beneficial. Ideally you want to try and achieve as many marks as you can in the multiple choice section, since it’s really not that hard, in order to secure a distinction. The last 5 questions on the other hand are quite difficult especially since they are not multiple choice. One thing I have noticed with AMC, is that sometimes they have a tendency to borrow questions from previous papers with some of the numbers switched around. I recall they did that last year for 1 or 2 of the final problems and since I had already practiced similar questions, this helped boost my mark to a HD.

I did AMC but it was in year 6 and got a distinction, the last 5 questions have 6,7,8,9,10 marks on them so they are really hard. Back then I found quite a lot of year 6 AMC past papers and I noticed that the final question on the past paper actually appeared on the exam so I knew how to work it out.
