Is there any specific maths that i should focus on improving/revising before next year, i'm doing advanced math and possibly Ext 1 (next year being year 11).

I missed out on a fair bit of geometry but by looking at the syllabus i don't think stuff like congruence and similarity would really come into play.

First three chapters which are just revision of Year 9/10 content that is your first step.
The second focus on the logarithm side there is a lot of talk on this topic. Knowing that you can then explore the natural log and then explore exponentials.
Third, master the concept of the gradient which can also be called the tangent and the normal because this is a very apparent idea in calculus yet it is the building blocks of mathematics.
Another vital topic is mastering quadratic functions, oh I do not where to start on this, it's everywhere.

you could learn differentiation its just a few steps further than year 10 maths.
Yes but just that is scratching the surface of calculus. You need more than that to know calculus.

Quadratics are what I'm most comfortable with, so that's good news. We are doing circle geometry in 5.3 Year 10 at the moment, will that be useful for Ext 1 ?

nope, except for the occasional vector geo q that wouldn't come up in the hsc lol.

If we went back 3 years ago this would still be useful. I mean you're learning about Standard deviation and mean in Stage 5.3 and this is another big topic in stage 6 maths. Hey, brush on that because it will come up again.

Hmm it says in the syllabus for Ext 1 that circle geometry is one of the topics. Is the syllabus sheet incorrect in that case?

no circle geo got removed from the hsc courses but u might use some theorems if u plan to do ext 2 for complex numbers (some schools like to put questions that require a bit of circle geo but its off year 10 stuff) or vectors, but its quite obscure. i'd still learn basics of circle geo to clear any doubts.

In that case, do you have a link to a website with the updated syllabus sheet.

https://educationstandards.nsw.edu....ge-6-mathematics/mathematics-extension-1-2017. no reference to circle geo in any topics except a vague statement;

make of it what you want, I'm just saying from experience that I haven't encountered any circle geo questions in any topic except for really obscure questions in vectors which demonstrate circle geo theorems through vector methods. you can check past papers if you want the extra-confirmation. I'd focus more on polynomials, logs, functions and other graphs component since thats heavily tested in prelim ext and adv.

If you struggle with Perms and Coms, definitely have a look at this; for me, I personally didn't like it as it is a topic which requires a lot of 'creativity' and 'logical thinking'. It really is different from a topic like calculus, where there is a set way for every question (at least differentiation more than integration). For some reason, the strongest students at Perms and Comms won't necessarily be the strongest maths students in general; their brain just works very differently in that regard.

im about to finish year 12, achieved great internal marks in my subjects and never did maths during the long holidays before yr 11. i think u should relax an maybe last 1-2 weeks do some preparation for topics such as calculus

perms and combs is such a fun topic though

i was honestly so sad when they had barely any perms and combs questions in hsc this yr

not sure about this comment, seeing a q11 perms and combs was one of the greatest feelings

I wouldn't say it's a difficult topic, but a better word to describe it may be abstract. People who can think outside the box (while applying quite simple concepts to do with factorization) will usually find it much more doable.

I would but I missed out on a term or two this year so I need to catch up a fair bit.
