Since neither option is a Go8 university, i.e. there is no comparison between a Go8 university and a non-Go8 university (in which case you would typically be advised to attend the Go8 university), choosing between MQ and UTS may not constitute much of a difference, especially provided you are a determined and diligent student and are able to achieve favourable results at either university, in addition to being able to undertake relevant work experience (such as a clerkship). In such a case, the effect that the university you attend has is likely to be minimised.

While my personal suggestion would be to attend UTS, there may be factors that are more relevant to your particular case that you may wish to consider, such as convenience in terms of transport and location, the flexibility of each university/program and so on.

Which uni is better for Law?

UTS is considered better for law, more well known among big law firms and considered to have a better more advanced law faculty. They also partner with UNSW law a lot (I mean after all AustLii is jointly run by UNSW and UTS law)

uni rankings literally dont mean shit. no one looks at them no one cares about them and most importantly they are arbitrary asf (they are based on research paper output, not very reliable as say hsc rankings)

Go8 universities such as USyd and UNSW are seen as having reputable law schools/programs, which has been practically manifested in the higher graduate employability compared to other universities in NSW and is the reason that a significant number of students who are about to complete their HSC and wish to pursue a legal career aim to study a Bachelor of Laws (which can be combined with another degree, such as a Bachelor of Business/Commerce) at either university. However, this does not necessarily suggest that attending either university is essential for those who are interested in becoming legal practitioners. Based on this, in the event where a student does not receive an offer to study a Bachelor of Laws at either USyd or UNSW, they should definitely accept other available options (such as UTS, WSU and MQ) and take them seriously because graduating with a Bachelor of Laws, especially with favourable results is better than giving up on the student's ambitions and career aspirations and not obtain a Bachelor of Laws at all.

According to the "QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021: Law & Legal Studies", UTS ranked at 61 while MQU ranked at around 101-150. This may be something to consider as you typically want the university with the stronger performance in your particular discipline.

Oh yeha I agree but uni rankings are even worse in terms of being gamed/rigged

In the law profession however as jimmy has said, law is suffering from an oversupply of labour so if u dont go uSyd/unsw gl working at a top law firm, in fact even for those at uSyd/unsw it’s not guaranteed you still need good grades + extracurriculars as well
