Transferring Universities how does it work (1 Viewer)

Guys I need help with how transferring Universities work like, after how long can you transfer what are the requirements and other questions etc. It would be really great if someone could help me and answer these questions for me and just guide me to the right path. Just in note ill be going to Macquarie University and wanna transfer to usyd after a semester because I think that's when your allowed to have a transfer.

Generally speaking, you can transfer after your first semester. If you choose to transfer after your first semester, the university that you wish to transfer to (in this case, USyd) will only consider your ATAR. If you initially did not achieve a sufficiently high ATAR for your chosen degree at USyd, it would perhaps be a better idea to avoid attempting a transfer after your first semester at MQ because the outcome is still likely to be unfavourable, just as it would have been had you applied to your chosen degree at USyd through UAC as a year 12 student. Instead, you may wish to consider attempting a transfer once you have completed your first year at MQ, which is when USyd will also consider your results at MQ and will assess which element between your ATAR and university results will give you a higher chance of receiving an offer. Here, you will have the opportunity of maximising your chances of receiving an offer to study your chosen degree at USyd, that is, by doing your utmost in order to ensure favourable performance throughout your first year at MQ, which will hopefully be of a sufficiently high standard for you to receive an offer from USyd.

Transferring to USyd will require you to reapply through UAC once the time comes. If you receive an offer, you will subsequently be able to apply for recognition of prior learning, which means that you will not have to repeat any units (subjects) that you have completed at MQ which USyd considers to be similar/equivalent to its own. This in turn means that you will likely not need to start your degree from the very beginning (especially if the degrees are similar). The exact starting position that you will be placed in for your USyd degree will depend on whether you will be awarded credit and if so, how much.

Thanks that does help me a lot Im currently most probably going to do marketing and media at Macquarie and then try to transfer usyd or unsw to do computer science and commerce which requires an atar of 96 for usyd and 94 for unsw. Currently I got 86 so does that make it impossible for me to transfer after one semester, as can't they look at my wam for that semester or is it only after your first year.

No worries. You should consider whether your performance in any of your HSC subjects would enable you to have adjustment factors applied to your selection rank. Both USyd's Academic Excellence Scheme and UNSW's HSC Plus allow up to 5 points. Assuming that you do end up having those 5 points applied to your selection rank, and given your ATAR, you can apply with a selection rank of 91, which is still considerably lower than the ATAR requirement of 96 for USyd and a bit lower than UNSW's requirement. Based on this, I doubt that you would be able to transfer to USyd after your first semester, although perhaps you have a bit of a chance of transferring to UNSW. However, I have to note that it is likely still rather low.

Yes, your WAM will only be considered once you have completed at least one year of full-time study (or part-time equivalent). This means that you will need to complete 8 units at MQ (which should take 2 semesters full-time) for your WAM to be considered.

hey I know this might be a bit late but also wanted to ask, if you could transfer after 6 months with just your uni results because my friend was discussing it and he said its possible I wanted to ask you about it if it is thanks once again.

I was initially referring to USyd because you mentioned in your first post that this is the university that you wish to transfer to. USyd will only consider your university results if you have completed at least one year of full-time university study (or part-time equivalent). Other universities may also impose this requirement.

If there is a university other than USyd that you may be interested in transferring to, it would be a good idea to contact that university so as to confirm whether the same requirement applies, or whether your university results will be considered without the need of completing a full academic year.

I was initially referring to USyd because you mentioned in your first post that this is the university that you wish to transfer to. USyd will only consider your university results if you have completed at least one year of full-time university study (or part-time equivalent). Other universities may also impose this requirement.

If there is a university other than USyd that you may be interested in transferring to, it would be a good idea to contact that university so as to confirm whether the same requirement applies, or whether your university results will be considered without the need of completing a full academic year.

No worries. I just had another look at the UTS website and I can confirm that they also have this requirement. However, they also have additional, less demanding requirements, which are as follows:

• 0.5 years (i.e. one semester) of full time equivalent study or more will be considered for applications to Arts and Social Sciences (except Education courses), Business, Design, Architecture and Building, Health (except Sport and Exercise Science courses) and Science courses at UTS.
• 0.2 years of full time equivalent study or more will be considered for applications to Business and Science courses at UTS.

This means that, if you intend to study a Bachelor of Business at UTS, you will likely be able to transfer after your first semester at MQ.

I also had another look at the UNSW website, and the requirement is essentially the same as that of USyd, i.e. to have your university studies considered for admission, you must complete at least one year of full-time study (minimum 0.75 full-time equivalent load) within one degree. The minimum 0.75 full-time equivalent load means that you can take as low as 6 subjects (instead of 8) at MQ in your first year and still be able to apply to UNSW. However, this may not be a good idea, because you might as well complete the other 2 subjects in that same semester, therefore allowing for a higher chance of receiving recognition for prior learning from UNSW.

No worries. I just had another look at the UTS website and I can confirm that they also have this requirement. However, they also have additional, less demanding requirements, which are as follows:

• 0.2 years of full time equivalent study or more will be considered for applications to Business and Science courses at UTS.

Yeah clarifies a lot thanks. I just decided that ill be doing computer science at western because its really close to my house and also the fact that I wanna do computer science and commerce next year when I transfer, which won't really waste an year for me if you know what I mean.
