how do i study for functions? (the topic for my term 1 exam) (3 Viewers)

i hate functions rn atm bc it's so hard to understand

oh and to clarify, we use cambridge 3u book for class, and the enrichment questions r demotivating me sm bc i can't solve them

past paper questions from your school, then go to thsc looking for more if you can't find any/you've done all of them. i hated functions (the sketching transformations bit), but ultimately it got a lot easier with practice

I also use the Cambridge textbook and am in the same camp in that I only get around half the enrichment questions right. Is it necessary to be able to get most of them right, or just an understanding of the concepts enough?

Enrichment shouldn't be an indicator on how well you'll do on the topic itself. Sure, if you're doing good in enrichment it shows you are more than capable in learning and understanding the concepts of the topic and possibly to a further extent, thereby meaning you might be more adept in doing harder questions, but does not fully correlate to how well you will do in exam condition.

I personally did every enrichment question possible just because, to kill time or as an excuse to study english less or bc they seemed cool. But I would attribute my exam performance mostly to being able to solve routine questions extremely fast and having enough time to tackle any challenging questions. You'll find the exams are designed in a way such that most problems are basic and require minimal thinking (focussing on "do you know your content") and the rest few are supposed to differentiate people who really studied the topic and those who just studied the bare minimum.

Focus on getting used to the exam condition, try to get in to a practice of doing problems in a short amount of time ; timing yourself will somewhat emulate the pressure you will feel in exams making you more better in that setting.In exams, I'd always find that its the nerves/pressure that would get to me at times and would lead me to make mistakes I'd never do so thats an aspect of exams you should be ready to tackle with. Silly mistakes is a big differentiator for many people so reduce the errors in your working out.

TLDR; Don't use enrichment questions as a benchmark for your ability, moreso your persistence and improving your problem solving skills. Do them if you want (highly suggest) but ensure that in weeks leading up to the exams you are more pragmatical in how you study. Saying this from experience.

Ty, that was a very detailed response. How do you typically practise for the differentiator questions? Sometimes it feel like the development questions are too easy and the enrichment ones are too hard. Should I just use past papers? Also moreso and pragmatical are not words.

i agree with everything you said above. except that for here every time if i struggled with an enrichment qn assigned for school hw i immediately went to do english and came back to enrichment like an hour later

if you're getting around half, that's honestly pretty good. i talked about it in another post and the post above articulates it pretty well - try to attempt the enrichment questions but don't get discouraged if you don't get them or don't understand them. it's more important you understand the base knowledge in foundation and the consolidation questions in development completely - most likely, you're not going to get an enrichment-style question in your exams, though the stuff in the other two sections can and are tested

4u enrichment follows the same principle as the 3u enrichment - enhance mathematical knowledge + problem solving skills through using pre-established knowledge from the foundation+development sections. they're definitely more difficult than the previous two sections, and i think they're meant to match the kind of hard demanding 4u questions you could see in the hsc?

sometimes schools can test the stuff in enrichment for example there's a topic called second-order recursive formulas for mathematical induction. apparently it's not directly in the syllabus (only first order, someone pls confirm) and thus second order appears in the enrichment part, but it's tested in my school (and i'm sure many others) and is examinable in my school's assessments and trial

mildly irrelevant but i'm prepping for aio (aus info olympiad) and hearing anything similar to recursion makes me think of leetcode 😔
i learned coding during lockdown (haven't done any since we got out of lockdown whoops), the term recursion in that programming context does indeed ring a bell :D

bro ur school literally just be copying 4u questions from the cambridge book and pasting it onto the trial exam

sorry mate i'd love to agree with you, but i honestly think the reverse way... analysing english texts has to be one of the most fun things to do ngl...

i've stressed out over enrichment questions this year more than i have stressed about english 😭

this is just where u assume n is true for two values yeah?

math teacher's either have no soul or have been praying to eddie woo.

english teacher's are arguably one of the worst, and there can is a case to be made they are the worst.

history teachers are by far the most based though
