So it must be the version for when x>1. The answer is kinda wrong though because it excludes the possibility that a=0, in which case x would be equal to 1 so in the middle one

Understanding this the question should be fairly easy.

There are two cases. Case 1 is a = 0. Then a^2 +1 is 1. So sub into second function.
Case 2 is a > 0, then a^2 + 1 >1, so sub into third function

i feel like my school just skipped over so much content bc other schools even said that they've done transformations of functions n graphs since yr 10 but the first time i saw them was in yr 12...
