Hi all,

Could someone please clarify what is rinsed with what in a titration? and possibly what the effects are of doing it wrong (e.g., experimental concentration is slightly higher/lower if we use water instead of the titrant - idk)?

Suppose it's a titration of NaOH against CH3COOH, using the NaOH in the burette. Out of the burette, pipette, and conical flask, what do we rinse w/ water vs NaOH vs CH3COOH???

Burette: distilled water and then NAoh
Pipette: distilled water then ch3cooh
Conical flask: only distilled water
Consequences:
Just think about it
Rinsing burette with water= less naoh moles= more volume needed to reach eqm point= overestimation of moles of ch3cooh

Rinsing burette with water= less naoh moles= more volume needed to reach eqm point= overestimation of moles of ch3cooh
so basically: first, everything gets rinsed w/ distilled water. then, put the conical flask aside. finally, everything else gets rinsed w/ what goes in each respective thing?

Rule 1. All glassware has to be rinsed with de-ionised water, to make sure it is not contaminated.
Rule 2. Every vessel that is volumetric, i.e. it has lines scribed on the outside, must get rinsed a second and a third time with what ever solution is going in next. That means burette and pipette are rinsed twice with the solution that is going in next.
Rule 3. All rinse water and rinsed solutions goes down the drain.

So, you do not rinse the conical flask with anything other than de-ionised water, or else you are going to distort the number of moles in the reaction.
