Transferring from Bachelor of arts Bachelor of advanced studies (languages) to a Bachelor of Psychology USYD (1 Viewer)

Hello.

So I'm commencing my studies at USYD in July in the course Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Advanced Studies (languages), but in reality, what I really REALLY wanna do is a Bachelor of Psychology to become a school counselor/clinical psych. So I had a chat on the phone with the school and the guy said that after 1 semester, USYD would only look at my atar to see if I got into the course. So for a bachelor of Psychology, you need an 85 atar and I got a 91.30, but I really wanna get into honours which is 96. Another question is if I need to pick units that relate to a bachelor of Psychology in my one semester of a Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of advanced studies (languages). Thanks.

Says who? If you get your masters you become a registered psychologist. I’d personally like to work as a school psychologist then maybe think about working in a clinic. School psychologists are in very high demand, I wanted to become a teacher at first but saw that school counsellors get payed the same and don’t have to manage 30 kids at one time .

if you are looking for pay I don think either are the best option

I am not looking to be the richest woman on earth, just wanna live a comfortable life; I wanna start a family one day. Going to uni will be a fun experience too, I know we're in a recession right now, and I'm not sure what the economic landscape will look like in the next ten years but to just earn my degree and be registered as a psychologist seems very fulfilling. I'm sure if anyone puts their mind to it they can be employed in what people call 'useless degrees.'

And for that degree combo, I got into it and I just wanna use it to transfer into psych, unless you think I should just stay on this gap year and start uni february next year in the psych degree.

why do you want honours anyways its not much of a difference is it?

Well, I'm still doing my research but to get into honours is the only way to get into a master's of psych -> leading to becoming a registered psychologist. I'll just give it a go, if I don't maintain a 75 WAM I'm pretty sure I can do a master's of teaching (counseling).

Have you every thought of the option of majoring in Psychology in BArts and transfer to Bachelor of Psychology, and then proceed to honours?

Look im just gonna spend the rest of my gap year working then apply again for psychology as the math prerequisite is gone and tbh I just dont think I thought ab uni hard enough when I graduated last year.

you don’t have to but it’ll probably shorten your degree, as said above I’d just choose a psychology major in the Bachelor of Arts and then as long as u perform well enough you should be able to transfer without adding any years to you degree or any problems

Mate, I know Psychology doesn't bring big bucks but it all depends on how strategically you approached during the degree. That works for all degree combination. People still get decent jobs in Humanities and Social Sciences because they did everything right. It all depends on how well could you avoid the disadvantage of it and maximise the advantage of the degree.

It depends on what you value but I would never do psychology or any other unemployable degree because you are disadvantaged compared to just doing a good degree even if you have done everything right and you have maximised the advantage of the degree.

I think that would be a mis-representation. Occupations are highly specialised, so there is no "disadvantaged compared to just doing a good degree". A Social Worker job will only care about degrees and attributions related to social work, sociology, psychology, etc. Also, you forgot about the soft skills these degrees can bring to a job, employers realise that HASS degree graduates can have some values. The main reason that they are in disadvantage is because that they don't have specialised technical skills compared to graduates of CS, Finance, etc. But these are things that you can put up with doing a double degree/network hard/getting whatever experiences that you can. There is a reason why graduates having a double degree with one of them in the Humanities and Social Sciences tend to have a better employment outcome than just having a single degree in the "good degree".

You also have to know that in some degrees, specialised knowledge only gets taught on the Master's level, but when these knowledges are transmitted properly, it translates to high salary (Organisational Psychology is a typical example of this, so is Clinical Psychology).

It depends how you play the cards. Organisations have their preferences, align to their all their preferences as much as you can is the key to success.
