How does free periods work? like what subjects allow free periods? I've seen ppl say that some of their friends take a non atar subject and get a free period or something. What kind of subjects do I need to choose/ what do I need to do to be able to get that? Are there any pros and cons?

what about both year? 11 and 12
for 12 a lot of people just sleep in them lol, because their so tired. YEar 11 is def a lot less free periods, its more or less just school starting at 9 for example and finishing say at 1, while in year 12 you get a few free peorids, esp near exam/assesment time that u SHOULD be dedicating to studying/memorising material.

hmm I think it depends on your school more, and also the depth of the subject, and how independent it is...no matter the subjects you most likely WILL get free periods no matter what esp near assessment times. u should ask ur teacher tho they should know

It definitely depends on how your school does it, but generally the number of free periods you get it going to be influenced more by the units you take (12 vs 13). Yes, the number you have will vary depending on the different subjects you take but no specific subject should cause you to have no free periods and it really is different school to school. If you choose to do distance education (e.g. if a subject is not offered at your school) you'll generally be given free periods in place of a subject you would've taken instead to complete the online coursework, which might be what also happens for non-atar subjects? I'm not sure about that. But yeah, asking your teachers will be your best bet

idk if this differs by school but in yr 12 you get free periods. in yr11 you do full days where the 6 subjects take up your time table. in yr12 most people drop down to 5 subjects, and then the time slot of that sixth period becomes free. for example; my free periods are when art usually runs, but i dont do art anymore so i have a free during art. also keep in mind that most schools change the timetable for year 12

you get free periods once you hit y12. you could technically drop a subject now and get a free when the subject normally runs, but then you wouldnt be eligible for an atar (you need 12 units in yr 11). just wait for yr12 to come around, then enjoy the frees.

also update - i spoke to my school and my trial exam extra time has being increased back to 5 minutes per 30 minutes. they initially put it down to 2.5 bcuz thats what they applied for with nesa (idk why), but i told them im really struggling so theyre increasing it to 5 for trials.

it's also a great way to catch up with friends ngl i did study but towards the end of y12 my friends and i lowkey gave up and just played monopoly deal during those 💀
i know people were cooking kbbq during free periods in the senior study hall in my school 💀

just bear in mind how many you'll get with 13 units vs 12 units. in my school 13 units meant you got no study periods, but if the difference between 13 and 12 isn't relatively much you could consider factoring that into your decision
