Compact Disk - Read Only Memory
Literally just CDs almost the same as DVDs.
They are an old storage medium that can only be read and not modified by a computer.
They are read by CD-ROM drives that use optical sensors to read the disc.

CD-ROM as others have said, is a read-only technology. Disc diameter is 120 mm and 1.2 mm thick. The standard data capacity is 680 Megabytes. Data is encoded as a spiral track containing a series of pits on a thin layer of aluminium, sandwiched between two very flat layers of plastic. Data is read back by shining a focussed laser beam onto the tracks and detecting the reflected intensity. Other variants are the CD-R disk which is a recordable disk, and the CD-R/W disk which is re-recordable, i.e. it can be erased. Samuel Davis devotes quite a few pages to discussion of optical disk technology in the Preliminary course.
