Hi, I was wondering if theres anyone that has completed or is doing a uni degree in commerce or economics.

I was wondering if it is necessary to have done hsc economics, as when i was making my subject selections i was scaredoff by the seniors saying economics was too hard, and only picked business but im kinda regretting not picking it now.

Also as someone who struggles to understand concepts quickly would commerce or economics be for suited to my abilities?

I was also thinking about a double degree with law/commerce or law/eco as I'm more english minded than maths minded, but im not sure if the two extra years will be worth it in the working world, as I've heard people do physics degrees or political science in uni, and still end up working and big four banks.

At the same time i'm not even sure i want to pursue an finance based degree as i dont particularly have a strong interest in it, but imjust unsure on what i should do and my whole family is in the finance field.

I can't tell you much about the degrees themselves but you definitely don't need to have done HSC economics. Obviously it helps give you some foundation in eco, but I've heard that uni eco/commerce is very different. I've also heard that there's quite a bit of maths in eco (calculus, statistics and such), but that might also depend on what major you take, e.g. econometrics must have a lot of maths. Commerce also has a variety of majors, so if you don't do quantitative stuff like finance you'll be absolutely fine.

I think people do a law double degree to improve their competitiveness sometimes, for example if they want to get hired at an investment bank (there's a lot of competition in commerce), but if you don't actually want to become a lawyer or do something law-based it might not be worth it.

But also, don't do finance just because your family is in it! It might help you get into the field but there are so many other options

I'm doing a Commerce degree (at UNSW) and I have a close friend who does a double in Commerce/Economics (also at UNSW). From my experience in Commerce you don't need to do a lot of economics unless you plan to major in Business Economics/Behavioural Economics. You do need some background surface-level information to form the context in which certain business operations are conducted and decisions are made etc etc but from my experience it's all been the very basic micro and macro stuff. I found it to be very easy and I didn't do HSC Economics or Business Studies in HS

Economics is arguably more intensive and has a lot of deeper content intricately linked with mathematics than Commerce is, but tbh a lot of Economics graduates do end up working in the same fields Commerce graduates do especially if it's regarding Finance etc. Do you like law or are interested in pursuing a career in law in the future? I'm a very English-minded person but I stayed away from it because the kind of stuff really didn't interest me

Finance is more quantitative so probably if you're not really interested in doing some maths (same with Economics but more so) and you don't really have a strong interest in it then Commerce or Economics might not be for you. Commerce has a wide range of majors and disciplines beyond Finance and Economics (Accounting, Management, Marketing, Analytics) so if you do like what you're doing in Business you could consider aligning that with a Commerce specialty if you're interested. However though if you really don't have a strong interest you might as well not bother because Commerce is kinda expensive and it can quickly get boring if you're not interested in the content (I do it at UNSW so they make all Commerce first-years do different courses exploring all the different major disciplines so I liked certain ones more like Accounting and Finance over others like HR)

thanks for your input !! I havent really done enough research into law yet to know whether id like it or not but Im mostly interested just based on the fact that i like english based subjects (reading, writing wtc) as of now im just fairly interested in this field, but hopefully i can find what im really passionate about soon 😅😅. Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts theyre really helpful, and i hope you enjoy the rest of ur degree!!
