should i drop english extension 2?? (1 Viewer)

for context, i have 11 units (technically 9 because I finished 2u math). but with term 4 out of the way, i’m considering dropping this subject before i stretch myself out thin lmao. trying to keep it short and simple:

reasons why i even took up ee2 in the first place:

• My english teacher said i would “probably get an e4” since my irp for ee1 was “strong” (it was literally 83%...)
• literally everyone in ee1 decided to take up ee2, so out of peer pressure i also took up the subject
• If i took ee2 and had 11 units, i would flunk ee1 (since i was doing pretty mediocre) and attain that prophesied e4 in ee2, meaning that ee1 wouldn’t count towards my atar. clearly i had extremely flaky reasons for taking the subject lmao

i did my viva voce last minute and got 80% somehow, which is probably ranked last based on how passionate everyone else is about their mw. despite my “flaky reasons” for taking the subject, i do have a concept for my mw but was never able to coherently express it to my teacher because 1. it was highly personal and i didn’t feel comfortable associating it with an academic context and 2. I had always imagined it to be something multimedia (not film btw), novel length and also something that doesn’t exactly have textual integrity... aka something that defies the major work guidelines and constraints and would NOT get an e4.

also its very important to note that i have abysmal time management. I dropped art knowing that i couldn’t do two major works but with subjects like chem and 3u math, and having recently screwed up advanced english, i’m better off doing no major works and spending time rectifying those subjects.

but then again, despite all the good reasons to drop ee2 i sorta don’t want to??? it mainly has to do with my ee2 teacher referring to the subject as the “inner sanctum of english” with the “four best english students in the grade”… people have also told me doing three extensions is a "flex". i know it's ridiculous to keep the subject based on that, but I really can't resist the peer pressure. The ee1 class is identical to the ee2 class so if i dropped, i’d be the only ee1 student not doing ee2. If i drop ee2, ee1 will definitely count and well… i don’t exactly enjoy it lol, even worse that it has an exam component unlike ee2

so what do you guys think?? am i better off dropping ee2 and trying to improve my marks in ee1, and especially devote more time to chem and 3u math and adv english so i can get a band 6 in those, rather than potentially sacrificing them for ee2 english which prob won’t end up being an e4 result anyway? any help appreciated

Do you geniunely enjoy ee2 and feel like the effort you put in is going to be worth it (whether in high marks/band or enjoyment of subject and knowledge gained)?

im doing it because i enjoy it not because i care less what others think. based on what ur saying i'd drop it because its extremely gruelling and ur reasons to keep it are ridiculous to say the least

Going off what you’ve said if you have really poor time management I’d suggest dropping and focusing on your remaining units. I did E2 English this year and had really bad time management which meant I had to cram a lot of it in the 2 days before the due date, which coincided with my Trial Exams and as such negatively impacted its quality and my performance in the other exams. Looking back I wish I had either dropped (I contemplated this as well) or had more consistently invested time into it throughout the year as the final product should reflect a year’s time commitment. So yeah if time management is gonna be a problem consider dropping, don’t worry about external pressures from your peers and teachers and do whatever is best for you. Best of luck!!!

Despite what I wrote in the latter, I didn't end up dropping eng ext 2 until a month before it was due. Don't continue with the subject because of your teacher saying its the inner sanctum, or for the 'look' of doing 4U english. That motivation will slowly dwindle, because truthfully no one gives a fuck if you are taking an extra class, or at least they won't for more than a week. That's not to discredit the course, or those who take it at all, but ultimately it's absurd to study something, for other people. This is your hsc. Not theirs, and you'll feel silly at the end of it, if you study something for nothing - all for people who you'll never see again. I personally felt awful dropping bc i didnt wanna dissapoint my teachers. But they want what's best for your hsc journey as a whole.

Additionally, even though you have passion for your topic, if you don't feel as if you'll be able to fit your vision for the confines of a HSC rubric, then you might still find that you are lacking motivation. This is what will kill you - or at least it is what killed me. Because you'll still need to meet the deadlines set by your teacher, even though you don't want to. I hate looking back on how many hours (particuarly over the summer holidays and the first term of 2024), of the school year, that I spent unable to be productive, because EE2 was always clouding my mood and motivation to work. If it gets to this point, it's never going to be worth it.

From what you mentioned about poor time management, and needing to gain leverage in other subejcts, I don't think that EE2 is worth the time. Yes a good E4 in a single unit may bump you up, but if your other subjects improve hollistically, you'll likely see a bigger improvement. It doesn't matter how good the idea is, you will need to WORK for this subject. Countless hours drafting, workshopping, researching and seeking feedback which makes you delete 3/4 of what you've written. This isn't the type of major work (if there are any) that you can do last minute. If your time management stopped you from doing art, I think you should consider how equipped you are to handle this.

Ultimately, it is still early days. There's nothing wrong with seeing how you go over the holidays. If you don't have anything substantial done by the start of the text school term, or if it gets to a point where it affects your ability/motivation for other subjects (as it did for me), you can drop. Just don't be like me and hold it out until the last minute, because I wasted many hours knowing deep down I would eventually drop.

it is sorta enjoyable but not enjoyable enough for me to stick with it.. the idea of being able to research and read whatever I want is exciting.... but for that to culminate in a major work of sorts, i really dont think the effort will be worth it. invariably what will happen is that i'll doubt my abilities as a writer, not communicate with my teacher (bc i don't think hes very approachable) and produce a half arsed mw right before trials (valuable time that could be spent studying). so yeah I think it's best that i keep any of my personal projects divorced from the context of the hsc lmao

thanks so much for your perspective, i actually read your original thread on you wanting to drop ee2 before I posted this, and while u unfortunately can't reverse the past it is really regrettable that u didn't drop ee2 sooner (for the sake of your own sanity)... not saying that to put u down but i really didn't want that to be the case for me due to forcing myself to continue cause of external pressures.

with everything u have mentioned here and taking other people's advice, i think its best I drop the subject. i dont plan to do any work during the school holidays, nor do i feel motivated or ready to put in the hours (as i'll be going overseas for a month, starting tomorrow lmao) and well... i definitely underestimated the sheer workload of this subject. and you have a great point about doing this for people that I'll never see again, because nobody is gonna gaf whether or not i did ee2 in the next three years LOL. i may disappoint my teacher but I'm sure he will understand that this is for my own good. and it's better to drop sooner than later.

how did you find ee1 as a course? i really struggle with it for some reason... and with me dropping ee2 it is definitely gonna count towards my atar now. i can always improve of course but it was super hard for me to put in the hours during prelim... me being unmotivated for ee1 shouldve been a red flag that i didn't have the vigour required for ee2 lol

but anyway once again, thanks for your help, and I do hope you achieve your desired atar of 97 lmao. i may have only done 2u math for this year's hsc, but the anticipation for the 18th is absolutely killing me
