The subjects which I got for Year 11 and 12 is Advanced English, Advanced Math, Ext 1 Math, Physics, Software Engineering (Previously known as SDD) and Industrial technology. When choosing these subjects I didn't really take scaling into deep consideration and already had a belief that Industrial Technology Multimedia would be scaled lower, but until recently I did not expect the results to be scaled down very massively to the point where even a mark of 100 equals a scaled mark of 80. Currently I am panicking and considering to swap Industrial Technology to biology or chemistry. I'm just really unsure because I do not know or have not seen anyone get an atar of 90+ with Industrial Technology counted as one of their units. I am currently doing so well in IT and enjoy it but I will take strongly commit myself to studying chemistry or biology if advised to take it. I know that it is possible to achieve a high atar with any combination of subjects but it has just brought my hopes down not knowing that anyone has gotten a high atar with Industrial Technology.

Essentially, the system has a comparative foundation, meaning that the ATAR reflects your level of performance relative to your year's HSC cohort, where a higher ATAR reflects superior performance to a certain percentage of students. This in turn means that your performance in each of your subjects will be considered in that same manner in terms of ATAR calculation. As such, a high mark in a subject like Industrial Technology will still contribute positively to your ATAR.

The notion that a student can achieve a high ATAR with any combination of subjects does not exclude Industrial Technology. In fact, ATAR data from UAC shows that a high ATAR can be achieved with Industrial Technology. Each year, UAC publishes a scaling report for that year's HSC cohort. See the highest ATAR achieved by a student who took Industrial Technology and where this subject counted towards their ATAR below:
  • 2024 - 99.5
  • 2023 - 99.1
  • 2022 - 97.05
As you can see, there have definitely been instances of students achieving an ATAR of 90 and above with Industrial Technology as one of their subjects. Based on this, if you are confident in your ability to do well in this subject, scaling should not deter you from taking it. Of course, the decision is yours to make. I simply provided clarification that will hopefully assist you in making a more informed decision.

I hope this helps! :D

Thank you so much for providing this information. This has given me a lot more confidence, and I think I will continue with Industrial Technology.

yes my friend did the exact same subjects as you but eng std and 4u maths and got a 91 atar, very possible
although i dropped IT multimedia in y11 because for me the major project was going to take up too much time during trials and im terrible at time mgmt

Subjects look fine, although I think you're missing one since thats 11 units and normally you need 12 for year 11... If you're really scared just pick up ext 2 and drop industrial design, and youll have 4u, Eng Adv, Phys, SE. Assuming SE will scale well (which is likely since its an application based subject and SDD scaled fine), thats an incredibly solid line up that can get you a 99.
