for context- im in year 10 right now and i had gotten an A on my half yearly report but that was only based on term one multimodial which was the only term where i got an A in english this year. and then based on that, i was reccomended to do english extension for y11/12 and still chose adv bc i was scared of the workload.

HOWEVER.

the following assessments after were VERY rough, with me barely scraping an average or slightly above average mark.

my EOY report tells me i got 2% above a B. (keep in mind a B is the MINIMUM to be able to do advanced english)

im getting As for everything else that relate to what im doing next year. its just stoopid english im worried abt since its compulsorary and only 30 or so people who do adv at my school (including ee1 and ee2 people who do adv) get a band 6... and the top 5-9 people who do standard get a band 6.

my grades for the year are as follows:

90% (avg: 80%)
77% (avg: 70%)
70% (avg: 70%)
70% (avg: 68%)

what do ido gang? eng adv or standard? i need that 95 atar fr...πŸ˜“πŸ˜“πŸ˜“

standard can be quite hard to get a band 6 in, and your cohort is more likely to drag you down. you might get a higher rank to offset this though. also, in the common module (i.e. paper 1) you're marked against advanced anyways.

worst comes to worst, you can drop in year 12! but it's much harder to go up to adv than to drop down to std, so give yourself the most options by picking adv first!

just out of interest was year 10 a bit of an indicator of your performance in prelims/hsc? like if u got 80 in year 10 on average would u get 80 in year 11?

def not. There is so much room to improve and ur marks can change a lot. Also my marks did flop at the beginning of year 11 but then my marks gradually got better and now there back to where they were before

Definitely english advanced. Also it is worthwhile to mention that it is statistically more probably to get a band 6 in english advanced than english standard. So don't stress too much about how only 30 students get band 6 and how most of those people do 3u or 4u english. Even if you can scrape a 80+ raw, it will scale and contribute to ur atar well.

For example: For english standard, you need approximately a raw mark of 87 for an atar contribution of 95. However, for english advanced, you only need a raw mark of approximately 83 for an atar contribution of 95. Note that these values may change. I have attached my sources below.

never do standard if you care for your atar, especially in a subject like english. since everyones forced to do at least standard, chances are youd be crammed in a cohort of people who slack and will, in turn, drag u down. by the sounds of it youre doing alright so i doubt you'd struggle in advanced

tbf dont spike ur cortisol for english
if you can work with its subjectivity and nuance, itll become ur best friend
uggh thats the thing im worst at tho like i put in sm effort for english and i WASNT SPECIFIC ENOUGH LIKE BFR
also the advice was some shit like "practise timed writing" and i wrote like 5+ timed essays in the lead up to the exam in my own time too like it was so frustrating receiving thattttt

dw, in year 10 the teachers always give you some half fucken assed feedback cos they prioritise seniors. in my junior years i had to fend for myself and get feedback from external sources lmfao

I would recommend Advanced tbh. Also, its much easier to move down english compared to maths.

you'll be fine. dw scaling will carry u. Like a raw 67(not intentional) scaled to 81 one year. Also even if ur the bottom of adv it's ok cause if u do std then you'll have to get top top

Getting 70/100 raw most years will get you a band 5 in the exam for Advanced. Also, Standard won't be significantly easier (easier than Advanced but it's not going to be a subject that you can 'bludge' and still expect to get a good result in). Most notalbly, to get a band 6 in stnadard, you have to be pretty much on par with regular advanced kids to get that mark as the common mod essay question is identical in studies, standard and advanced, which means you have to write better than lower ability advanced students in order to give yourself the best possible chance of a high mark. You can still get a 'good' ATAR doing standard, but Advanced gives you more of a chance to acheive well, in that most kids in your adv class would be motivated to do well, which can help you strive to achieve your very best. Now, this is not me being against standard english, but doing Advanced will overall will push you to do well.

Take my advice as a grain of salt. But I can speek from experience. I got 55% in my first y12 adv assessment but ended up getting 95% in my trial exam. So basically, don't stress about it when you haven't even started yet. Give it a go at least, try your best, you may even surprise yourself. :)

Also, rank distance is much more important than your physical rank number. If you are all close together in average marks, being better than '52% of the cohort' will ultimately be irrelevant if you are all close together.
