Today i got my chem at1 results (but not the paper)
i got 66% and ranked 5th, (im gonna argue for more marks on monday when we get our papers)

how is it that my ranks are gonna ‘save’ my hsc mark if my marks are so bad?
shouldnt it be marks > ranks rather than ranks > marks?

your raw mark in the actual hsc matters, but your raw mark in random assessment tasks isn’t what matters (only the ranks and relative mark differences between them), because NESA doesn’t know how hard your random assessment task was

So how come your final hsc mark is 50% internal and 50% external if they dont use the internal marks and only ranks?

bc they use the mark that your rank got in your cohort in the final exam. then it is moderated by the relative gaps between ranks. this is that '50%' you get contributing towards your final mark.

Ok so the grades for my chem class were:
1st 28/32
2nd 25/32
2nd 25/32
4th 24/32
5th 21/32 (me)
and we are 15 people

if i get a raw 80 in chem hsc, assuming my rank remains constant, how would that affect me in terms of final hsc mark?

~80 in chem aligns to around 86 so that will be fixed as your external mark. then you get the 5th rank's mark which is then scaled somewhat closely to the above. you don't know what mark that will be until u get ur mark. so its completely in the air rn what ur prediction is.

For example, you ranked 3rd in a subject internally, and your HSC mark was a 95 (which was the highest in your cohort for that subject). Your external mark is now 95. However, your internal mark will now be the 3rd highest mark received in your cohort for that subject which could be like a 91. Your final subject mark is then an average of these two.

In short, your internal rank determines which HSC mark is allocated to you for your internal mark.

You keep your exam mark. Your assessment mark comes from your school's performance in the HSC exams. Just keep on working hard and get as close to rank 1 as possible to maximise your chances of getting your desired mark. Your school may be making your tests harder/marking them harshly. The HSC exam will better reflect your performance as every person sits the same exam. Don't worry, just persevere. Let me repeat this, your marks internally have no bearing on your 'assessment mark' as who ever in your cohort gets the highest exam mark (e.g 93%), the person who gets that exam marks keeps that exam mark, and then NESA will give that 93% to the person who ranked 1st internally as their 'assessment mark' and then they work down the ranks.

erm AKSHUALLY you don't get the 5th rank's mark that's an oversimplification 🤓
