    BoS meet up

Thanks to those who voted. Looks like the most preferred date is Sunday 18th December! (also after HSC/ATAR results are out) Now for the next steps. For those who are serious about coming on the 18th of December (most likely during the day), please post here and/or send me a PM to communicate...

    BoS meet up

It will be within the Sydney metro area. Will do a location that is reasonably accessible by public transport. Still need to give some thought about exact place but for now just need to narrow down particular day(s) as the first step.

    BoS meet up

Any preferences for type of activity? Thinking of doing it around early to mid-December. If there are less than 10 people coming we can probably keep it low key with like a lunch/dinner outing + some activity perhaps? If it’s more like 10+ people actually coming then maybe something like a BBQ...

    How does scaling work?

Contrary to popular belief, scaling has nothing to do with difficulty of the subject. It is actually not possible to quantify “difficulty” objectively, so I honestly do not know why this myth keeps persisting. Scaling is completely data driven and is based on how many “smart” people are in...

Importance of grinding in high school vs University

From an academic perspective, I personally found uni way more intense than high school. They go through a lot of content at a much faster pace than high school. Also, self-discipline is much more of a thing in uni because you're not really "forced" to do work like in high school. You are solely...

made a couple equations to estimate aligned marks

I believe alignment is piecewise linear. The raw band cut-offs are determined by judgement and all the marks in-between the cut-offs are determined by interpolation.

    BoS meet up

Hi all, With the HSC exams almost done, I want to see if there is any interest in having an in-person meet up event. For background, this was something that used to happen regularly many years ago on BoS, which helped build a strong sense of community and even some friendships amongst peers...

HSC Maths Exam Gets an F for Failing Our Students

It is not really valid to compare alignments between subjects in the first place given they are not about reflections of difficulty. They can only be comparable between years for the same subject. Alignment is more about the “standards” one expects of a band E4 student etc, which is somewhat...

HSC Maths Exam Gets an F for Failing Our Students

Speaking from experience writing the BoS trials, the irony is that the Ext2 paper is very spacious with plenty of room to fit in just 1 year of content into 100 marks, whereas the Ext1 paper has hardly any room to squeeze in 2 years of content into 70 marks.

HSC Maths Exam Gets an F for Failing Our Students

Interesting opinion piece from the head of Maths at SCEGGS, particularly ripping on the Ext1 HSC paper: https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/hsc-maths-exam-gets-an-f-for-failing-our-students-20221101-p5bul5.html Interested to know people’s thoughts…
