If I want to pick up 4 u maths then is it unwise that I do 12 units total for the HSC? Especially if I'm doing not so well in one of my subjects.

If you plan on taking on MX2 then I would say even 12 units would be extremely difficult to juggle unless you have excellent time management skills.

During non-exam periods complete your homework and study for no more than two hours per day. More than that, and I think you're unnecessarily straining yourself. Two weeks or so before exam periods I usually go for three hours of revision/homework per day.
