    Physics marathon (hsc)

So should the answer be: a) Increase because less 'fling' effect and less bulging b) Decrease because less bulging at the equator would also means the poles would be less flattened so would end up being further away from the centre of the earth (not in relation to 'fling' effect) Anyone confirm?

    Physics marathon (hsc)

Just curious, doesn't the rotation of the earth also cause it to bulge at the equator? So would a slower rotation speed mean the earth wouldn't bulge so much at the equator and it would be closer to the centre of the earth and increase the value of g?? Also: doesn't the 'fling' effect reduce...

    General Thoughts: Mathematics Ext 1

Yay, not alone. I bombed in this test. Completely devo.

    General Thoughts: Mathematics Ext 1

Did anyone else find it as hard as me? I'm all alone :(

    Q14

I think to explain that 2001 question, the equation was made equal to k unlike yesterday's equation where they added a k. So if you did that with yesterday's equation, y would be equal to -k. So yes, there would be no solutions for y<-32 but then y = -k so -k<-32. Divide by a negative and change...

    Q14

Put the equation from yesterday's paper into wolfram alpha or another graphing program. The lowest point is y= -32. Then add +32 into the equation in place of k and graph again. Then the lowest point will be y=0 so if k>32, the curve doesn't cross the x-axis, hence no solutions when k>32.
  7. K

    Q15

    Yay :D
  8. K

    Q14

My thinking was that if you added 32, and raised the curve up by 32, the minimum point would no longer cross the x axis, hence no solutions so k>32?????

    Q16

Re: radians/degrees?=/ I'd say it depends on the marking critera, but it did say 0 < theta < pi/2 so I think they would have preferred radians :\ But then again, its still the same thing so I'm not sure.
  10. K

    Q12

Yep, then you had to find the volume of water flowing through in 10sec.
  11. K

    Q14

oh fffff should it have been -32?
  12. K

    Q12

    Thats what I got.
  13. K

    Q16

Beast :D Haha, yep think I'll definitely get zero for C.
  14. K

    Section I - Multiple Choice

Yeah, I got that. Its increasing so f'(x) > 0 then it was a concave down point so f''(x) < 0
  15. K

    Q14

Yeah, I got k>32. Took me a while to think of it though because I kept thinking about the discriminant but it wouldn't work. Sames. I hope thats right :D
  16. K

    Q16

    Haha this.
  17. K

    Q16

    Yay, I got pi/6 too :D
  18. K

    Q16

I completely BSed it until it happened to give me the answer but I had the equation from (i) and another equation and I simultaneously solved them, then made x^2 > 0 which happened to give me a half. No idea what the other equation was, though :\
  19. K

    Section I - Multiple Choice

Yeah, I got 8A as well. No idea if that is right ahaha
  20. K

    Q16

Haha this!! I managed to get C (ii) but I just could not work out (i) :O Didn't get time to look over everything because I spent so long on 16, but provided no stupid mistakes like I usually do, the rest was all pretty good :)
