    English Tutoring | 99.80 ATAR

Hi all, My name is Jess and I'm looking to tutor Year 11 and Year 12 English Advanced/Standard students. I did my HSC in 2014 at a top selective school, achieving a 99.80 ATAR, 95/100 in English Advanced and 47/50 for English Extension 1. I now study Arts/Law at the University of Sydney. I've...

    Holiday advise??

I'm going to say something extra apart from obviously telling you to study - Set solid goals. If you have an ATAR goal, start figuring out how you're gonna get there. This means all the practical finnicky stuff. Look at the ranking for your school, find out how many band 6s your school got in...

How long should we be aiming for to write an E4 response?

My teachers have recommended 1400-1700ish words, I think that's around 12 pages. It's not a hard and fast rule obviously but given the depth of EX1 they expect you to write in depth as well, and most of the time this is better achieved with more content. Yes it's quality over quantity but why...

How to answer to what extent english questions

It's unlikely to be a decisive factor in your essay however I would probably recommend yes, tell us to a minimal/moderate/significant extent only because it shows you have properly answered the question.

Tutors and students, what are your tutoring experiences?

So I'm starting to tutor a class for English. Throughout the past year I've been private tutoring and I've always conducted my lesson in a Socratic way, with the understanding that it is the student coming to their own opinions and interpretations that matter the most as opposed to me rattling...

Help! Law at Sydney/UTS? Very confused

I heard law at UTS has a much more relaxed atmosphere. I talked to someone who transferred from UTS to USYD this year and she wants to return to UTS simply because she likes the atmosphere there.

Hating Uni - wanting to drop out

Hey! You're the one who started up the thread about the units of study a while back, right? We're doing the same course. If you want to, you can talk to me anytime :)

    Finding academic articles?

Make a library card for the State Library and you can access the JSTOR database for free. Or, some schools subscribe to databases, so just talk to your school librarian about it. Google Scholar is also a nice starting place, some articles are free online. Online university libraries and...

Does USYD grade on a curve?

You might want to ask your faculty? My arts units don't grade on a bell curve, but law does.

    Help: Mod B Yeats

http://aterriblebeautyisborn.com/ My teachers recommended this website. If you want, you can PM me and I'm willing to read some of your ideas and maybe suggest further points to develop your ideas.

    Avoiding plot retelling

Structure it in terms of technique and analysis rather than plot. Given the nature of the question is transformation, I understand how you may gravitate towards plot retelling. But instead of showing how your thesis statement works in the text through plot, show it through techniques. A very...

Adapting your Creative to the Stimulus

How does a book relate to a road? Well, you can use the stimulus any way you like, but incorporating it non-literally is generally more favoured and will likely score you higher marks.

Modern History General Questions and Essay Help Thread

    2. Yes, one point per argument. The reason why your teacher said it obscured the argument is probably because your paragraph had too much waffling and unnecessary content, which made your paragraph unnecessarily longer. 3. Historiography is not necessary, but it's recommended. Use historiography...

Modern History General Questions and Essay Help Thread

Yep, I know how it can get frustrating sometimes when its difficult to differentiate between narrative and analysis. Some key tips that my teacher and friends recommended: - When making notes, minimise *what* happened in the event but make it about the *importance* of the event. Talk about...

Modern History General Questions and Essay Help Thread

What your teacher means by the strength of your thesis is not how strongly you agree or disagree to the question, but how strongly you present/explain your argument. Does that make sense? You can partially agree, but you must specify clearly and logically why you only agree to some aspects and...

    Struggling to write essays

Wow, this was exactly me for Mod A last year. It's perfectionism. This is making you stress out about writing the perfect essay. Remember that it's still earlyish in the HSC right now and everyone sucks at writing essays (at least not to the quality that you'll end up in by the actual HSC)...

How do you write a thesis when you get an essay instruction rather than question?

The instruction can easily be changed into a question - "How significant is Caesar in the play and why?" Don't overthink this. No matter how the question is written, it is fundamentally still an essay question so there's no need to adapt the thesis. If you look at past HSC questions, most of...

11 or 12 Units for the HSC!?

I would say drop Chemistry and do 11 units. 11 units is still good because it still gives you that one unit of "safety net" but you also get more free periods (to study or to play around haha). Don't worry about scaling because if you were thinking about dropping 3u english to get down to 12...
