    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

Chemistry marathon 2015 Excellent answer! However, for five marks you might want to include - the role of the yeast enzyme zymase as a catalyst - the ABSENCE of oxygen - the production of a low concentrated ethanol (~15%). I wouldn't really consider low ethanol concentration a reaction...

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive That's a great answer! I'd suggest adding in a test for a known neutral solution too (eg NaCl) and perhaps name the household acids/bases you're using (caustic soda, vinegar, lemon juice, etc) but other than that it's perfect. Also, the inclusion of a...

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive Yay another 15er! Please answer the indicator question if you can so we can keep the thread going :)

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive Guys pls. That's actually a really good question since it's one of the pracs that a lot of people forget to study. We need more 15ers here to answer these though. I'll see if I can recruit hawkrider

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive I had 200 posts and like three bars of rep when you guys dragged me out of this thread haha

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive For HSC purposes it's best to explicitly state that as potassium is an alkali (group 1) metal salts of potassium will always be soluble.

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive Oh wow, I couldn't have done that hahaha, especially with remembering that you have to exclude some ions beforehand if you're performing some tests. Though I wrote out my solubility rules really simply and had little mnemonic kind of things to remember...

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive What about the solubility of potassium salts (remember it's an alkali metal)

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive Seriously? Did you have to rote learn all of the tests for identifying the presence of ions in unknown solutions in monitoring and management? Wasn't that more difficult in the long run?

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive What about the potassium?

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive It should have been covered in the year 11 course. It is absolutely vital you learn them before the HSC.

    HSC 2012-2015 Chemistry Marathon (archive)

re: HSC Chemistry Marathon Archive You really need to learn the solubility rules.

Chemistry marathon 2015 Lol I was trying to make them get it themselves, but I think this whole thread is mostly going to be 14ers answering questions and queen and square derailing hard. Basically the same as the last marathon lol

Chemistry marathon 2015 What else about KNO3 makes it suitable? There's a factor you've left out you'd probably need to mention for two marks. To give you a hint, what are group one metals and nitrates know for?

What's the difference between a radical and peroxide?

Cool question, can't really be answered though since there is no real 'difference' per se. A peroxide is an example of a free radical. Organic peroxides (R-O-O-R) have an O-O bond (this bond is literally called the peroxide bond, as a bit of a give away). Two radicals are formed when this bond...

    Unsw timetable

Not really abnormal for science/law. Sci has a lot of contact hours because you have lectures, tutes and labs. I do sci/law as well and I have a five day week. But Friday is a half day for me
