Prelims are an indicator of how much effort you decided to put into a year that didn't really count. You will probably be studying twice as much next year as you have been this year and the marks should reflect this.

Not exactly. Essentially, you can't get any higher than the highest mark in your cohort. Whatever the highest mark is, first gets that for their internal assessment mark, and whatever the lowest mark is, last gets that for their internal assessment mark. The marks in between are aligned so that...

You have the wrong mindset. Instead of thinking: I stuffed up those tasks, I am coming last in the class, i should move down. Think: I didn't do too well there, I should ask the teacher where I went wrong, address my weakness and work to get a better mark next time.
