    Semester 1 results

well, it seems like theres a maths stream now, when I did it last year, it was a maths/physics, not that I found the maths stream much better than the physics anyway... and you guys have said the best/only good thing about SCIF was the camp, and we didn't even have one lol.

    Graphical Inequalities question

np, good to see someone studying hard for hsc :P good luck and goodnight :)

    Graphical Inequalities question

because the question has it. You just see that you have to change what you have from parts i and ii into some form to be used for part iii. And you can also tell from the partial fractions thing they give you. (also note 1+x^2 > 0 )

    Graphical Inequalities question

Well, u do what it asks, use the previous parts. From parts i) and ii), you know that \frac{x}{1+x}<ln(1+x)<x Then you can divide the inequality through by 1+x^2. Then u integrate the lower and upper bound from 0 to 1 and you'll get the answer.

not if you get 95 in SCIF :P and yeah, organisation in SCIF was horrible when I did it too. We never got told most of our marks, until we got our results....so, never found out our marks essentially.

    Preliminary mathematics marathon

yeah, i think so, he used it to have crazy approximations for some numbers.

    Preliminary mathematics marathon

I learnt a bit of continued fractions in one of my courses (MATH2400 finite maths UNSW), probably got taught it for 2 hours in the entire sem though.

How much harder is 4U maths than 3U?

yeah, it can be, but unlikely (especially if they put it in the 2unit paper)

    70 WAM. Easy or difficult?

    math1151/1251 people are smarter.

    Uni Course thread

If you do adv. maths, then you have to do honours in maths, it comes with the degree. So, as long as you stay in the degree, (70+ WAM i think?), you'll be doing maths honours.

    Preliminary mathematics marathon

yep, u can do it like that, but the more obvious way i thought was to say x = 1+\frac{1}{x} :) well done. Just read the wiki :P http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_ratio I haven't learnt it in uni, although it comes up sometimes, like in that above "continued fraction" representation of the...

    Preliminary mathematics marathon

    :) Find the value of x = 1+\frac{1}{1+\frac{1}{1+\frac{1}{1+\frac{1}{1+\frac{1}{1+...}}}}}

Improper Integrals & LIMITS help needed

That logic is a bit flawed, although the answer is right. When you "sub" in infinity, you'll get 0 * (infinity) which is what the original poster was asking about. When you have something like this, you can use L'hopitals rule. Which states that if you have a limit in some indeterminant form...

    Languages at uni

yeah, u'll still have to do some other arts subjects, but say, if there was latin, you could do another language for your other arts subjects or something else, theres quite a lot of variety of arts subjects.
