    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

It will be interesting to see where Australia’s “critical mass” is in terms of vaccination rates - where everyone is vaccinated to the point where you’re just left with people who will outright refuse to get it.

    Biden Leaving Afghanistan discussion

Unfortunately, for the US it’s a choice between horrible options either way to get out of this hole that they dug themselves into. Either being stuck in this state of “forever war” or withdraw (which they inevitably have to do at some point it was just a matter of when). You’re kidding yourself...

I’ve ran out papers help! Anyone know where I can find hsc questions filtered out from past papers.

Have you looked at all the previous HSC papers in the old syllabus? The vast majority of the new syllabus overlaps with the old syllabus so as long as you know what the relevant topics are, you can selectively look at questions from at least 20 years of past HSC (and trial) papers.

    The future of Sydney

For me, the biggest turnoff about the US is how far everything is politicised and ideological. It is ridiculous how something as basic as say mask wearing or vaccinations can be made so partisan. At least here (and arguably in most other western democratic countries), most leaders across the...

    how does it work

You will always get your own external mark. Moderating has no influence on that at all.

How much do the gaps in ranks matter when averaging out assessment and exam marks.

Moderating only occurs on the internal marks. The gaps between the ranks are largely preserved in that step and it’s just a matter of shifting the position of the cohort relative to the state (which is informed by the external marks of the cohort). In your example, person B and C must have very...

    Classroom of the Elite

But seriously, no spamming especially in the school forums or else we’ll have no choice but to act. Keep it school related thanks.

    Classroom of the Elite

Since this is inextricably linked to the Biology Marathon Thread, why does this need to be in two separate threads rather than more conveniently contained in the same thread?

    99.95 atar

Correlation does not mean causation. It is possible to achieve 99.95 with any combination of subjects. However, there are only 20 or so that are given every year in the state. Therefore, the range of subjects that these 20 or so students did will naturally be quite limited in the data collected...

    2021 HSC

I don’t think there is any suggestion from the Premier that what they proposed for Year 12s will be completely reversed. It’s more that it will take a different form compared to what was originally promised. It’s a classic case of announce the proposal and sort out the details later on...

I can answer textbook questions but not exam ones

Practising past exam questions should always be part of your study routine

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

Just to be clear, I didn’t actually make any inference about future trends based on the previous waves. To clarify, my comparison was purely a statement of the data as of today comparing the outcomes of this wave so far versus previous waves at a similar point in time. The whole point of why we...

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

Why not? So you have a more infectious variant which may impact the dynamics of the situation. However, what matters at the end of the day is outcomes (i.e. number of infections/hospitalisations/deaths) and at this stage they are not at the levels of previous waves.

    Coronavirus/Covid-19 Discussion Thread

Putting this in perspective, the numbers are still hovering around that of the first wave last year (which peaked around 200+ cases in a day) for NSW and nowhere near Melbourne’s second wave (which peaked around 600+ cases a day).

    A general question for limits

I don’t quite follow what you did there, but the answer is definitely not 1. You can plot a graph and see for yourself that the limit is undefined (at least for the two-sided limit).

    Lockdown extension

It would be very unusual if the downward trajectory was faster than the upward trajectory (especially in the absence of vaccinations). It took us a month to get to this “peak” (if it really is at that point) so it would take at least that long to get out of it. Given the transmissions are now...
  18. Trebla

    A general question for limits

The limit is undefined (unless x is coming from a specified direction) because the square root of x^2 is |x|, not x
  19. Trebla

    Lockdown extension

I think this is starting to turn out to be our version of the Melbourne second wave this time last year, so should probably look at how things turned out back then as a reference point.

    Roots

This isn't a "shorter way" per se, but is an alternative if you're really that lazy to expand... Let y=2\alpha+1. Since \alpha is a root of the polynomial then \dfrac{(y-1)^3}{8}-2\times\dfrac{(y-1)^2}{4}+4\times\dfrac{(y-1)}{2}+7=0 (y-1)^3 - 4(y-1)^2 + 16(y-1)+56=0 Since we get same result...
