how many pages are your summaries

Yeah I agree completely. Notes might be in a 3:1 size ratio (or thereabouts) with summaries.

Eng Adv. Module A half yearlies!

Ha, we managed to convince our Ext Eng teacher that we didn't need an exam but rather should just hand in an essay and a creative. :haha:

    Frankenstein & Blade Runner Quotes

The first especially is awesome for so many reasons.

    Frankenstein v. Blade Runner

First off, Mary Shelley was as high as one could be during the Romantic Movement and was generally considered to be very promiscuous and the Modern Prometheus of the term "loose woman." Apart from that, Shelley personally seems a little bit too ignorant of science and is readily biased on such...

    Integrated or Block Essays?

Belonging - BLOCK essays --> full marks Modules - Probably integrated essays are ideal

How to get band 5 without a tutor!

+1 That's the first thing I thought of when I saw this thread. As cliched as it may sound: "If you reach for the stars, then you just might land on the clouds."

    Speeches - eye contact

We recently did an oral assessment for Ad. English and just before presenting my speech, I asked my teacher whether we'd be marked on eye contact and he pretty much indirectly said "I don't give a shit." I ended up getting 20/20.

    Immigrant Chronicle Discussion & Ideas

If it hasn't been mentioned already, in terms of ORTs it's better to find a text that enables you to draw differences between texts during synthesis rather than similarities. (I.e. All your texts shouldn't be about Immigration and cultural disparities.)

    Belonging short story

Yeah I'll read over it for you although I anticipate you'll get very diverse opinions as creative writing is quite subjective.

What constitutes a full marker Short Story?

It's awfully subjective, but personally I reckon it'd have to incorporate the following: - descriptive language/artistic flair - interesting and perhaps unconventional writing style - unique conceptual exploration of belonging - emphasis on the internal aspect of belonging (i.e. what it means to...

    About the Belonging Short story

Yeah I've done it before. That being said, however, I incorporated a lot of philosophy within my creative and had a sustained internal monologue.

    Creative Responce - Belonging

Last year's HSC Creative question was actually quite specific so I wouldn't be surprised if they had something similar this year so try to have a piece that is more universal and transcends age differences.

What are the limits in Creative Writing?

The HSC English course is awfully biased and while nearly all markers are generally open-minded, some topics still remain taboo. I'm not entirely sure about "rape" but I probably wouldn't take that risk. Try writing about something that is more universal and transcends age differences.

    Short story/creative writing/belonging

+1 I've also been told that HSC markers also do not look favourably upon a piece that comes off with too much self-pity or a protagonist who is essentially a masochist. Hence as other posters may have already suggested, it is best to introduce a unique element to your story that is able to...

Power AOS: of mice and men??

It probably could, but the issue of "power" is more of a peripheral aspect to the intentions of the novel as a whole. Steinbeck, more or less, is seeking to highlight the alienated, lonely and somewhat vicarious lives of the 1930's depression working class. It has more to do with their lack of...

How to study for Listening/Viewing Tasks?

+1 Basically, write/scribble down anything you deem to be a technique if even if you're unsure as to which one it may be (i.e. mise-en-scene is a great one for viewing tasks --> why are certain things placed in the scene? what is there intended purpose? etc.)
