The Thread for ALL FIRST YEAR QUESTIONS.

There might be a limit to how many you are allowed throughout the degree, or how many you are allowed in one semester, as well. I think you can find this info on MyUNSW somewhere.

    Maths in Engineering

Check your answers by differentiating them.

Anyone likes bio but never get good mark for bio?

Well, I was going to suggest that you become a biomathematician, but looking at your previous posts, you haven't done the right first year maths subjects for that. So unless you want to spend more time at uni, it is not possible. Btw, your marks in bio are well above average, so nothing to...

a challenge to all you maths nerds out there :)

On-line Encyclopedia of Integer Sequences. 1,2,6,42,1806 - OEIS Search Results Hours of fun.

An elegant proof of Euler's identity!

Well, you could try x=0, couldn't you? But the deeper problems still remain.

    hard math questions stumping me....

    r^2 must be non-negative.

    general UNSW chit-chat

All the material in Complex Analysis is covered in the first 7 chapters of that Brown and Churchill book. I thought it was a very good textbook when I did that course.

    general UNSW chit-chat

If they'll let you, why not. Actually, why not see if they will let you into Higher Complex Analysis? I wouldn't bother to accelerate just for the ordinary level course. You could also consider taking Finite Maths if you have already done Discrete.
  9. I

    general UNSW chit-chat

What I disliked about it, is that it was basically a grab bag of little tricks and funny polynomials that happen to solve particular differential equations - Legendre polys, Hermite polys, Chebyshev polys, Airy Functions, Bessel Functions, and the list goes on. Why anyone would actually...

    Science Advanced Mathematics

I finished the BSc/BEd in mathematics 18 months ago. I would say about half of the students studying to do maths teaching had done MX2 and the other half had done MX1. I only knew one student who had only done 2 unit and it seems he struggled quite a bit (he was still accepted into the...

An elegant proof of Euler's identity!

Of course you can do it. You are saying that good 4u students should be able to do it. My point is that 4u students have no justification for assuming that they can do it.
  12. I

An elegant proof of Euler's identity!

Well, it is a nice question, but you have to assume that you can do calculus with complex numbers in the same way that you do calculus with real numbers.

Yes. I did a B.Sc/B.Ed at UNSW a couple of years ago. I am just doing the masters out of interest. Don't really plan to work at uni.

No. I am a part time masters student (in applied maths). Teaching high school maths is my day job.

    HD Average

Hehe... Don't worry, Seraphim. The school of Ed doesn't seem to have any academic prizes at all ... what so ever... not even a university medal. (Probably because nobody does honours in education.)

    general UNSW chit-chat

Linear Algebra was one of my favourite second year maths subjects. I also liked Complex Analysis. I hated DEs, but in retrospect (since I am now trying to be an applied mathematician) it probably is useful. You might want to consider that subject where they teach you how to use MATLAB...

    Curve sketching

You need to show that the curve passes through the same point for two different values of the parameter. In this case, if t=2, you get x=4, y=0. And if t=-2, you get x=4 and y=0, again. You would also need to show that both x(t) and y(t) are continuous functions of t in between these...

    general UNSW chit-chat

I don't think you forgot to use partial fractions, but the inverse transform of \frac{s}{s^2+1} is cos t, not sin t.

What a cesspit this uni is turning into! 12 week semesters and now exams on Saturdays. I am so glad I don't have to do coursework at UNSW any more.

The Thread for ALL FIRST YEAR QUESTIONS.

The seating is arranged at random. The invigilators give you a card with your seat number on it as you go in the door. I guess this is so that you can't arrange to sit next to your friends and get assistance from them in the exam. Since when did the uni start running exams on the weekend?
