    Post Trials Atar Estimate

Hmmm - which top 5 school has 5 Ext 2 maths classes?
  2. B

    ATAR estimate please

My wish is that before I die, every student will understand the moderating process. But of course I don't believe in miracles.

urgent Internal ranking & marks question

Why are you looking at worst case scenarios? Do you really think this scenario is possible if all 5 were so close internally?

    HSC 2015 MX1 Marathon (archive)

Re: HSC 2015 3U Marathon You'd better read the question again - it's not asking for the highest velocity.

    Permutations question

That's what I'm saying - OP has it correct.

    Probability HSC question

Part (ii) doesn't need any calculation. The probability that the car is on the last level he happens to choose is clearly one in three.

    Permutations question

Whoever provided the other solution had a valid method, but got their numbers wrong. The possible arrangements are: Vcccc cVccc ccVcc cccVc ccccV So the 4 times 3! for the vowels should have been 5 times 3!. They must have assumed 4 consonants equates to 4 places for the vowels - the...

Determining Rate Change in an Investment Question

Here is the solution: As you can see from the final answer, your choice of 2.4 was not ideal either - any lower and it would not have worked again (because 1.01375^64 is 2.396).

Help with a coordinate geometry question.

Alternatively: For the two circles in the 1st quadrant, the equation must be of the form: (x-r)² + (y-r)² = r² since they touch the axes. Substituting y=2-x and rearranging into a quadratic in x gives: 2x² - 4x + (a-2)² = 0 The discriminant is 16 - 8(a-2)². Setting this to zero so that there...

Determining Rate Change in an Investment Question

Are you asking how to do the question? If so, I'll post a solution. If you know how to do it and are setting it as a challenge question, I'll leave it for students to try.

    Help! I've broken maths!

It is a parabola. The equation can be rearranged to: (x+2)² + (y-2)² = (x-y)²/2 LHS is the square of the distance of (x,y) from (-2,2). RHS is the square of the perpendicular distance of (x,y) from the line y=x. So it is a parabola with focus (-2,2) and directrix y=x.

    Probability problem

Just like a 2D number plane is divided into 4 quadrants, a 3D number plane is divided into 8 octants. So I don't know if he is talking 2D or 3D. And if it's 2D, I don't know exactly what he means by octants - does he mean that there are four concurrent lines in the number plane, spaced at 45...

    Probability problem

Do you really expect everyone to drop everything and get online within half an hour just to answer your question? Further, your question makes no sense. What is "it"? "It" is divided "by??" 8 octants means nothing if you don't say what "it" is.

You mean NSG? So it challenged you then?

Determining Rate Change in an Investment Question

This question is not clear. Are you saying that the money is invested for a certain period of time at 6% pa, and another period of time at 5.5% pa, with the two time periods adding to 16 years? If so, the question doesn't work - even if the interest stays at 6%pa for the full 16 years...

    Tricky probability question

As I said earlier, Integrand's working is correct for a different question. ie. If someone tells you that ONE of the jellybeans is black (but not which one), then the answer IS 2/7. Since we are specifically told that the jellybean in his hand is black, the answer is 4/9.
