Medicine after 1 year of uni

I don't know much about the marks needed to transfer into something like UNSW medicine. However, I do know of several people who have transfered into UNSW (and USyd) combined law after 1st year with a combination of a UAI/ATAR in the mid 90's (i.e. 93 - 96) and who attained a distinction -...

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

You missed the point. Suppose I ask you why it is wrong/immoral to deny people the exercise of their freedoms. Eventually most people bottom out in gut instinct and claim that it 'just is'. Moreover, the fact that the incorrectness/'stupidity' of my statement 'cannot be expressed in words' acts...

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

Uhuh, and why is physical harm immoral?

    Which Uni? Which Major?

Peter Singer and Graham Priest (to Princeton and CUNY respectively). Sadly for Melbourne both of these dudes are top class philosophers. That said, Melbourne has one of the strongest philosophy programs in Australia, with Monash not too far behind. As to what philosophy is like - it is...

How long does it take to become a paedeatrician - 10 years?

Currently there are no formal intern examinations, though the possibility is being discussed by a number of bodies, partly due to an increased need to rank junior doctors in training due to the sudden influx of graduates from all the new medical schools. Relevant factors will include...

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

If morality depends on an intuitive faculty, such as might warrant the term 'moral sensibility', then one would expect moral tenets to issue from gut-feelings rather than as conclusions of rational argument. After all, if we take the path of rational deduction how do we obtain our initial premises?

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

Aye, that statistic certainly won't bring hope to childless, middle-aged women.

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

Quibbling over semantics. The common lay interpretation of bestiality is typically sexual and, in most states at least, does not include cat massage.

is my father right - how much of a factor is the 'reputation' of the uni? usyd vs UTS

Re: is my father right - how much of a factor is the 'reputation' of the uni? usyd vs I don't know enough about the job market to know whether a specific degree name will impress employers. Assuming that employers that take in graduates look at degree transcripts I would think that marks would...

How long does it take to become a paedeatrician - 10 years?

FRACP stands for Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians. The RACP has two primary divisions, one of which oversees training in adult medicine, with the other dealing with paediatric medicine. The website is probably of more use to a medical student, but see if you can get...

How long does it take to become a paedeatrician - 10 years?

A rough minimum in NSW would be: - Undegraduate medicine (5 - 6 years) - Two years of hospital rotations for registration and experience (2 years - PGY1 & PGY2) - Basic training (3 years) - Advanced paediatric training (3 years) Therefore you are looking at ~ 14 years if everything runs...

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

Note that we would be looking at qualitatively different kinds of birth defects, such that they could be more severe in one of the two cases. Either way, I love your reductio - well played.

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

That's a fairly weak argument to my mind. It seems to be premised on a false dichotomy - that kids will either try a pure, legalised, (?safe) drug or they will chug on something industrial and skanky (and presumably not both?).

Is having sex with children necessarily wrong?

The following is spoken in a speech by Pausanias (a young man and lover of the Greek playwright Agathon) in Plato's Symposium. I thought it might be interesting as a comparison from a different culture and time: "It is in general true of any activity that, simply in itself, it is neither good...

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

If we're going to have crack bars then I would rather keep the curious youngsters out, so to speak.

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

Sure, fair call. I put it in the latter category on account of issues of doseage and the risk of respiratory depression when too much is taken, especially in combination with alcohol. It is the kind of drug which ideally requires regulation of concentration/doseage (along the lines of alcohol)...

Which Western Taboos do you agree with?

Read the part of my post where I say that they are not wrong in and of themselves (imo).

Re: is my father right - how much of a factor is the 'reputation' of the uni? usyd vs The Bachelor of International and Global Studies degree program is a complete marketing gimmick used to compete with other similarly named programs (word on the grapevine has it that USyd was losing politics...
