isnt it true that because I am doing english standard and not advanced..if i dont get PERFECT results I will ultimatley be scaled down?? I dont understand the whole scaling stuff.. would i get a lower ATAR per say?

I heard if you do something extra aside from studying for the HSC you can get bonus points for your HSC mark. Eg: Public Speaking= 3 Bonus Points. Is this true or is it just to make students study harder?
