Is a crappy ATAR gonna screw me?

Sorry to rain on your parade but for really competitive degrees like that, the minimum requirement generally is not enough to gain admission. Not sure what the cutoff would exactly be, but I would wager that it's very close to 7. 5 GPA is a low credit average which is pretty standard in uni so I...

    Hurlstone and Fort Street

Is the beautiful blue blazer not fancy enough? I understand (and still lowkey wish) we had caps but I get that they didn't want to cover up the uniform with a fkin black paint smock lol
  3. Q

Is a crappy ATAR gonna screw me?

    nowadays they're called 'adjustment factors'

Is a crappy ATAR gonna screw me?

If you're into medicine you might want to start looking into postgrad options as it's very hard to slide into an undergraduate program (extremely competitive). Not sure about how things work in Adelaide but here in NSW, people tend to be eligible for some sort of bonus points that they might not...

    Hurlstone and Fort Street

it's nicer to keep the traditional uniform instead of trying to americanise everything tbh - our grade tried as well but looking back, they stopped us for good reason.

Which uni is better for actuarial studies, and why?

No particular degree but Comm/Law is the main one i think? +HD WAM etc. Someone who works in investment banking from an actuarial degree would probably have gotten an actuarial role and IB isn't their backup.
  7. Q

Which uni is better for actuarial studies, and why?

Go8 means nothing - definitely not an ivy league sorta thing. mq is very reputable for actuarial (much more established degree) Jimmy is right in the fact that the possible career options are a bit more diverse (I wouldn't say much unless you do some completely different commerce major e.g...

    any tips or advice

Change your aim to "as best as possible" rather than band 6. These are very rare in standard english (just the way the course is designed) so don't be disheartened if you don't reach it (less that 0.3% of the whole standard cohort get a band 6). It honestly depends on where you are with...
  9. Q

Which uni is better for actuarial studies, and why?

MQ is better organised and structured tbh especially with UNSW having trimesters. I believe at UNSW, you'll have a few terms where you don't have actuarial units, and some where you might be doing a few, rather than having it consistently spread out. Also, the length of a semester just allows...

Help Pls with 4U Problem ASAP

I'm assuming you got somewhere near the required expression but not quite? Hint: consider the roots-coefficient relationship.

NSW teachers proposing a strike on the 7th of December

hot take but why should PE teachers be paid the same as maths/science/english/hsie (even music/art) teachers who have to make legit lesson plans and dedicate a lot more time out of school... it's not like they have to even do marking or anything (apart from a small group of hsc pe students)

Forgot to tick box for extra writing booklet

Do you mean the tick box at the end of the paper on the back page? Your supervisor would have counted the sheets to fill out the final form so I'm pretty sure NESA would know that you used 3 booklets for that question.
  13. Q

how exactly will moderation work in this scenario?

Probably. However, they do account for outliers. If one is last in school but by a small margin, but then in the HSC, some student gets a really low outlier, there will probably be adjustment. e.g. you're last on 60% in school, but the second last is on 63% (in school marks). There's a bunch of...
  14. Q

how exactly will moderation work in this scenario?

This is quite unlikely and NESA have their undisclosed measures to make sure this process is fair as I'm sure there are outliers. In general, at a school with a cohort of more than 3, it is very likely that a few people would've achieved scores in the 70s and 80s (you are padded out by those...
  15. Q

how exactly will moderation work in this scenario?

It depends of the distribution of the internal school marks. If the internal second is just trailing behind first, and well ahead of internal third, then they might see a higher mark than 85, as NESA aims to preserve the relative spaces between students.
  16. Q

how exactly will moderation work in this scenario?

If you are ranked xth in school, and the xth highest mark is 70, then yes, you will (in most cases) receive 70 as your internal mark. This is probably the best reflection of your performance in school and a fair measure. Unless your cohort is very small, this is actually quite a good...
  17. Q

how exactly will moderation work in this scenario?

Let's say you're 12th in your cohort. If the 12th highest HSC mark is 70%, then you will receive somewhere in the ballpark of 70 for your internal mark. If this is a middle of the pack rank, then there are rarely any discrepancies, so it's a fair reflection of your in school performance. I am a...
  18. Q

when does rank, hsc marks, atar come out?

Note that these are just your internal ranks which you probably already know from your yearly school report - this is just so you can double check for anomalies (sorry for using that word).
  19. Q

    Mark Gaps

They do try to maintain the relative spaces between students (not sure exactly how they do it). EDIT*** If you are second place and get the second highest external HSC mark, that becomes your internal mark pretty sure. Things get a little bit more complicated when they swap ranks and do a shuffle.
  20. Q

    Uni

I was having the same thoughts as a young one - didn't really know what to do and didn't have a clear objective either. Afaik there's no 'taster' classes but in your first semester, you can try to cover a wide variety of courses to see which ones you'd like. If you do something like...
