"..growing number of law schools .. around the world that have moved to a JD.."

Ditto here. I actually enjoy arts, but I get 8 non law units in my straight law degree, so it really didn't matter to me either way. To be honest, I think combined degrees have just become a bit of a fad.

To john's or not to john's???

If Johns wasn't so expensive I'd recommend it to first years. Bruce used to be a fantastic balance between partying, study and inter-hall activities. There was always something interesting on, and there was never any pressure to participate. The latest head/dean however, who is being replaced in...

The low down on Uni Lodge

Their social committee is pretty embryonic, and only really started getting into gear last year. They participate in most of the sports and some of the arts shield events, but most people are internationals and are mostly interested in doing their own thing. The rooms are quite nice, but...

    Law Review Unit

I've worked as a sub-editor of a non-legal peer reviewed journal, and I've found one of the hardest parts of the role was chasing up academics. The work can also get fairly tedious, since you need to back-check every single reference in a large research paper... just in case someone may be...

"..growing number of law schools .. around the world that have moved to a JD.."

Personally, I wish that I'd waited and done a JD instead of doing a straight LLB. Coming straight out of school though, with a high UAI, it isn't easy to "throw it all away" and tell your parents that you're going to do graduate law and an undergraduate arts degree in the mean time. I know I...

    2009 cut-offs

You're underestimating the lobbying power of Chubbasaurus and the ANU, the ANU could still successfully lobby the government for more places.

    Wow, that's pretty harsh.

    Self catering at ANU

Look, the colleges are in the CBD. Everything is there.

    Self catering at ANU

Everything is a walking distance away. There's a grocer just outside Unilodge and supermarkets ten minutes down the road.

    Commercial Law as a career

I didn't believe it either until I'd read it. RE: Salaries, the government lawyers tend to start on $45,000 which goes up to $55,000 after training. It's about $10,000 less than the starting salaries of graduates at bigger Sydney firms. The real catch is where the salaries of government...

    Commercial Law as a career

Relative to the public sector it is. I've read a friend's ACCC work agreement, and they're actually NOT ALLOWED to do more than a certain amount of hours per week. They actually knock off at a weird time like 4:43, to account for the time it takes for them to get to the bus/their cars ;)

Likelihood of being able to transfer into economics/law?

Economics is a very difficult subject. There are maths bridging courses available, but to be perfectly honest, I think you'll struggle with it. I don't know many people who AREN'T struggling with their economics degree. Regarding law, my gut tells me that your chances at a transfer are...

    Bachelor of Laws

    1) Do the degree which you want to do. Ignore what other people say you "should do" because of the perceived prestige (or in the case of arts, lack of prestige) associated with the degree. If you wind up doing a degree for the wrong reasons, there's a good chance that you won't enjoy it and...

    Commercial Law as a career

Commercial law is mainly application of sale of goods legislation. What you're thinking of is corporate law, which generally covers everything from director's duties to securities trading. 1) Besides getting your practical legal training, which most people will need to do after they graduate if...

    Information on Accommodation

That's a rumour only. I really doubt it though considering that the Head of Hall and Sub Dean only got back to Bruce 2 days ago after being away for over a month.

    Law w/ 94.65 UAI

I know people who got FEE paying offers with 91 and similar marks. 94 may be good enough to get into HECS law, but you're going to have to work your butt off!

To john's or not to john's???

Johns was the cheapest college on campus in 2008. This year they're ramping up the prices to around Burgmann and Unilodge's level. IMO the extra expense coupled with the bad company and awful food is a deal breaker.

Is UMelb law not that highly regarded?

Yeah, there's not much interest in Melbourne here because this forum is for school-leavers... and Melbourne is postgraduate only.

    class participation-do they actually care?

Class participation is easy marks. I also don't think the loud mouths are much of a problem, you get more marks for making one or two insightful contributions than running your mouth off for an entire class and stopping other people from contributing. Class participation can be irritating...
